About Fort Logan

The Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds, over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

About the position:

Overnight Shift - B Shift 1800-0630

Patient Care

This position provides nursing leadership and direction for staff and provide therapeutic work in the psychiatric care of mentally ill patients hospitalized at CMHHIFL. Primary responsibilities are applications of knowledge, expertise and experience in providing safe and effective nursing care to patients. Duties include:

  • Assessing, planning, coordinating, providing, and evaluating nursing care of patients with psychiatric and medical conditions, documenting all pertinent data.
  • Utilizing nursing theory and concepts to develop nursing plans of care and therapeutic interventions to support patients’ recovery, such as individual counseling, psychoeducational and teaching groups, and milieu management.
  • Communicating the nursing plan of care to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensuring that appropriate documentation is completed and essential information is shared from shift to shift; making rounds to assess patients’ psychiatric and medical statuses.
  • Notifying medical staff (physicians and licensed independent practitioners) of changes in patient condition and need for evaluations and orders.
  • Reporting patient care concerns to supervisor and physicians, as needed.
  • Directing, coordinating, and implementing medical and psychiatric crisis intervention in clinical emergencies, ensuring compliance with nursing standards and policies (e.g., de-escalation, seclusion/restraint, CPR).
  • May escort patients to activities and appointments on grounds and in the community, including driving patients to appointments.
  • Assuming responsibility for paperwork, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Determining whether the needs of a patient returning from a general hospital can be safely met by the nursing staff in terms of staff competency, equipment, and staffing levels during own and nearby shifts.
  • Collaborating with Nurse Manager and treatment team; recommending changes in program scheduling to benefit patients.

Milieu Management:

  • Ensuring a safe, therapeutic environment for patients using nursing judgment and techniques such as proactive problem anticipation, intervention planning, and responsibilities assignment.
  • Serving as Charge Nurse during specific shifts, providing clinical and administrative supervision of nursing staff, and coordinating staffing needs.

Medication Administration:

  • Evaluating and administering medication based on need, effectiveness, side effects, and interactions, using nursing judgment and policies.
  • Following all policies and procedures for medication documentation and order transcription.

Supervision and Delegation:

  • Being accountable for nursing staff, mental health clinicians, students, and others through delegation, supervision, and leadership.
  • Serving as Charge Nurse when assigned, providing supervision during specific shifts.

Patient Teaching:

  • Assessing and teaching patients and families about health care, illness management, coping, social and living skills, and medication side effects.
  • Supporting patients in building skills and self-efficacy through education.

Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning:

  • Providing nursing input into treatment planning and program development.
  • Acting as liaison between patients, families, and the treatment team.

Maintaining Skills/Competence:

  • Keeping skills and knowledge updated through ongoing education, supervision, literature review, and team participation.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Performing additional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience

Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the eNLC.

No Substitutions

Special Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age due to the juvenile population served at the MHI facilities.

Conditions Of Employment

  • Availability to work shifts including nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Full background and reference checks required.
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids or chemicals.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. Driver's License.
  • May need to escort patients or attend training.
  • Disclose prior disciplinary actions if applicable.
