Job Summary/Purpose: Our Patient Population

Ashley River Tower (ART) 6 West is a 21-bed acute care unit providing care to patients with variety of diagnoses. 6 West (6W) commonly cares for patients admitted on general medicine services, plus specialty services including GI surgery, surgical oncology, vascular surgery, plastic surgery. Additionally, 6W cares for patients admitted on cardiology, CT surgery, hematology/oncology and/or other services as appropriate based on patient needs. Generally, the unit’s patient population is adults (age 18 or older), though our team cares for adolescents (age 14-17) under specific circumstances.

Our Team

The nursing staff on ART 6W is trained to utilize a variety of devices, tools and techniques to assist in the delivery of safe patient care. Our unit has a variety of staffing and scheduling options offering prospective new team members flexibility. Our nurses enjoy an educational, collaborative work environment with all members of the care team including physicians, respiratory therapist, and other ancillary staff. We work closely with colleagues on our Rapid Response team and in MSICU (Medical-Surgical ICU, one of the ICUs located within the Ashley River Tower), who often assist us in meeting the needs of our patients should they need a higher level of care.

Engagement and Development

ART 6W has their own unit based Shared Governance Council. Unit Shared Governance affords our team the opportunity to be involved in decisions affecting our unit and the team’s workflows. Additionally, our team members have opportunities to participate on hospital wide Shared Governance Councils, influencing decisions throughout the hospital. In addition to Shared Governance opportunities, MUSC has a variety of pathways and opportunities for growth within your nursing career – providing opportunities for you to meet your long-term goals.

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse I (New Graduate) assists at the advanced beginner level in providing individualized, goal directed nursing care to patients and families utilizing principles and practices of the nursing process; interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes.

Minimum Training and Education: Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred unless current MUSC employee. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations.
