Job summary

St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children is recruiting a registered nurse to plan, implement, evaluate and document pediatric nursing care from birth through young adulthood. You will supervise licensed practical nurses and unlicensed staff, administer medications, monitor outcomes, and ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

• New York RN license required and current registration.
• BLS certification required.
• PALS certification required within 3 months of hire.
• One year pediatric or medical-surgical nursing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care per physician orders, standards of care, and departmental policies.
• Demonstrates competency in pediatric nursing duties.
• Administer medications and monitor responses and adverse effects.
• Observe and report changes in resident's condition to the medical team.
• Assess learning needs and provide education to patient/family.
• Attend and participate in interdisciplinary meetings.
• Communicate plan of care changes as needed.
• Accurately interpret lab values and report abnormalities.
• Acknowledge orders and ensure prompt implementation.
• Orient and precept new staff and assist in student nurse education.
• Identify unsafe practices or conditions and report them.
• Accompany and transports residents when medically necessitated.
• Participate in quality improvement activities.

Job description

Plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care based on facility policies and procedures and external regulatory standards through the competent application of the nursing process to pediatric patients ages 0 – young adulthood, supervises licensed practical nurses and unlicensed nursing staff. Supports Hospital's mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting agency standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

• Provides nursing care in accordance with physician orders, standards of care, and departmental policies and procedures evaluating and revising care as needed.
• Demonstrates competency in all skills required by St Mary’s Hospital for Children
• Administers medications in accordance with nursing practice standards, evaluates responses, outcomes and adverse effects.
• Observes and reports changes in the resident's condition to the medical provider and/or other appropriate health professionals.
• Assess and identifies learning needs of the resident/family, plans and provides for patient/family training and education, and evaluates level of learning.
• Attends and participates in interdisciplinary meetings.
• Communicates plan of care changes as often as necessary
• Accurately interprets lab values and reports abnormalities to medical provider.
• Acknowledges medical provider orders and insures prompt and accurate implementation.
• Orients and precepts new staff as directed and participates in the education of student nurses.
• Identifies and immediately reports unsafe practices and/or conditions related to resident care, or resident abuse
• Accompanies and transports residents when medically necessitated.
• Participates in quality improvement activities as directed

Requirements

• Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in the State of New York.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required within 3 months of hire.
• One year nursing experience preferred in pediatrics or medical surgical nursing.
• This position is subject to the schedule and applicable provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
