Job summary

Texas Health Action’s Kind Clinic in Austin seeks a Registered Nurse to support patient care across Central and South locations. You will perform vital signs, triage, administer meds, document care, and mentor staff while upholding trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+-affirming practices.

Requirements include Texas RN licensure, BLS, 1+ year outpatient experience, bilingual English/Spanish, and ability to travel between sites.

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent work experience required.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Texas required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must be obtained before hire date.
  • 1+ years' experience in outpatient patient care required.
  • Experience with LGBTQIA+ and/or marginalized communities a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with evaluation and care of patients including preparing for examination and taking vital signs.
  • Provide direct nursing care, including lab services and medication distribution.
  • Conduct follow-up visits and exams within standard of care and Texas Nursing Act.
  • Teach and counsel patients on health assessment, prevention and maintenance.
  • Mentor new Medical Assistant staff and coordinate with Clinic Administrator.

Texas Health Action (THA) is a community-informed non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to culturally affirming, quality health services in a safe and supportive environment, with expertise in serving LGBTQIA+ people and those impacted by HIV. Kind Clinic proudly serves Texas with four vibrant locations: two in Austin, one in San Antonio, and another in Dallas plus virtual care services available to all residents across Texas. Bolstered by Waterloo Counseling Center and a passionate team of over 250 dedicated employees and volunteers, THA is at the forefront of promoting healthcare equity and accessibility throughout the state.

The Registered Nurse will aid with the delivery of patient care during the respective clinic hours of operation, floating between our Central and South clinic locations based on clinic needs. This role will report to the Clinic Administrator and clinical oversight provided by the Associate Director of Clinical Nursing Services. To support operational and patient care needs, nurses may be cross‑trained and periodically asked to provide coverage at other Austin‑area Kind Clinic locations.

Core Functions
  • Assist with the evaluation and care of patients seen at Kind Clinic, including, but not limited to: preparing patients for examination, taking vital signs, verifying patient information by interviewing patient and recording medical history
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients, including the provision of lab services, and the distribution of medications and treatments according to accepted standards of care
  • Conduct patient follow-up visits and physical examinations according to accepted standard(s)? of care and within the definitions of the Texas Nursing Practice Act
  • Teach and counsel patients concerning health assessment and care including prevention of disease, disability, hygiene, and health maintenance in a safe, affirming, and culturally appropriate manner
  • Provide clinical training to new Medical Assistant staff and relevant feedback to the Clinic Administrator regarding training progress
  • Adequately reviews and prepares charts prior to daily visits
  • Serve as a mentor to clinic support staff
  • Act as a liaison and collaborate with Patient Support Center RN team as needed
  • Follow organization's clinical SDOs, policies and procedures when interpreting lab results, sending medication refills or scheduling treatments
  • Follow Texas DSHS notifiable condition verbal reporting requirements related to in‑clinic diagnoses of presumptive primary syphilis and acute HIV
  • Prioritize work tasks and services and completes tasks in a timely manner
  • Maintain accurate, clear and concise progress notes, problem lists, and medication lists
  • Communicate appropriately and tactfully with staff, patients, partners, and community
  • Actively engage in a quality improvement culture within department/organization and participate in identified-quality improvement activities
  • Participate in staff, planning, in‑service, and other meetings as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Compensation

Based on the position's duties and requirements, this role has a starting hourly rate of $37.59. The initial hourly rate will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications and relevant experience.

We’re also offering a $2,500 signing bonus for this role as a welcome to our team. Payment of the bonus is contingent upon successful completion of new hire training, completion of a 90‑day probationary period, and the employee remaining actively employed and in good standing through the payout date.

Requirements
Education, Licensure, & Certification
  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent work experience required
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Texas required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must be obtained before hire date.
Experience
  • 1+ years' experience in patient care in an outpatient setting required
  • Experience with LGBTQIA+ and/or other marginalized communities a strong plus
  • Microsoft Office Skills with an ability to become familiar with company or position specific programs or software
  • Ability to travel between Central and South clinic locations as needed; reliable transportation required
Your previous work life and education ideally include:
