Kaiser Permanente seeks an RN First Assistant to support the surgeon in the operating room with perioperative duties and patient care. You will work under the surgeon's supervision and collaborate with the OR team to achieve optimal outcomes.

The role requires perioperative nursing experience, completion of an RN First Assistant program, and multi-state licensure as applicable. Strong asepsis, positioning, and hemostasis skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of perioperative nursing experience.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Complete RN First Assistant program (75 hours clinical).
  • Current RN licenses in primary state of work and any required secondary state licenses.

  • Assist in positioning, draping, and exposure of the surgical field.
  • Provide hemostasis and tissue handling as directed by the surgeon.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job Summary

To provide qualified surgical assistance when requested by the surgeon, in order to ensure optimal results for the patient. This position is adjunct to the basic functions of the OR Nurse.

Essential Responsibilities
  • See OR Nurse representative duties.
  • RNs as first assistants in the OR will work interdependently with the surgeon, providing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
  • The Registered Nurse First Assistant will at all times act under the direct supervision of the Surgeon performing only those functions specifically stated in a manner consistent with his/her education and experience.
  • All assignments will be made by the ASC Supervisor or designee, with regard to optimum patient care.
  • Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique pertaining to the procedure being.
  • Skill and knowledge in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.
  • Assists in positioning, propping and draping of the patient.
  • Provides hemostasis by applying hemostatic clamps and/or clips, coagulates bleeding points and, ligates vessels.
  • Provides exposure by suctioning sponging and retracting.
  • Handles tissue, implants, etc., as directed by the surgeon during operative procedure.
  • Performs other related duties as directed.
Basic Qualifications: Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of perioperative nursing experience required.
Education
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing required.
  • Successful completion of an RN First Assistant Program to include a multi-specialty didactic component and seventy-five (75) hours clinical experience required.
License, Certification, Registration
  • This job requires credentials from multiple states. Credentials from the primary work state are required at hire. Additional Credentials from the secondary work state(s) are required post hire.
  • Registered Nurse License (Virginia) within 6 months of hire AND Registered Nurse License (Maryland) within 6 months of hire
  • Compact License: Registered Nurse within 6 months of hire
  • Registered Nurse License (District of Columbia) within 6 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support
  • Nurse Operating Room Certificate
Additional Requirements
  • In order to work effectively with patients, must have effective interpersonal and communication skills and be able to stand, walk, bend, lift at least 50 pounds, hears, speak, and see.
