Job Summary:

The RNFA-Cardiac functions interdependently with the surgeon, applying in-depth knowledge, expert skills, and clinical judgment to assist with complex surgical procedures. Responsibilities include assisting with sternal wiring, chest tubes, hemostasis, harvesting saphenous veins, placing drains, and wound closure. The nurse provides evidence-based perioperative care, delegates tasks appropriately, and collaborates with the healthcare team. Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in all patient and team interactions.

Job Description:

Nursing Process

  • Utilize the nursing process to advocate for patients based on thorough assessments.
  • Respect patient privacy, confidentiality, and cultural/spiritual beliefs.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively and work with anesthesia providers.
  • As charge nurse, coordinate with management, anesthesia, and surgeons for surgical care.

Professionalism and Technical Skills

  • Maintain professionalism and pursue ongoing development.
  • Apply aseptic techniques and perform roles of circulating and scrub nurse.
  • Assist with tissue dissection, exposure, clamping, coagulation, vessel ligation, sternal wiring, and wound closure under surgeon’s direction.
  • Harvest saphenous veins, assist with cannulation, and place drains independently.
  • Transport postoperative patients and communicate effectively with families and team members.
  • Adapt to emergent situations with sound judgment and teamwork.

Patient Safety

  • Administer medications accurately and maintain a safe environment.
  • Perform counts and recognize hazards to ensure safety.

Quality/Customer Service

  • Ensure accurate documentation and participate in quality improvement.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors, and staff.

Financial Accountability

  • Use equipment and supplies cost-effectively and ensure accurate patient charging.

On-Call Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to emergent cases and perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program, licensed in the practicing state.
  • Meet continuing education requirements.
  • Complete RNFA program and internship per AORN standards.
  • Maintain BCLS and CNOR certifications.

Specialized Knowledge:

Expertise in cardiac anatomy, surgical procedures, instrumentation, suturing, tissue dissection, vessel management, and operative techniques, including cannulation and decannulation.

Experience:

Minimum two years of OR experience in scrub and circulating roles as an RN.
