Job summary

Duke University Hospital’s Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is seeking an experienced registered nurse to provide and supervise patient care in a high-acuity, 20-bed unit with access to ECMO and ventricular assist devices. You will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment emphasizing teamwork and inclusion.

Responsibilities include planning, delivering, and documenting nursing care per orders, educating families, and guiding junior staff.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a BSN, ASN, or nursing diploma program with RN licensure.
• Current NC Board of Nursing registration or compact licensure.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Ability to document assessments, plans of care, and evaluations.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and collaborate with the healthcare team.

What you can expect

Location: 2301 Erwin Road, Durham, NC 27705, Duke Central Tower, Unit 3B

The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is a 20-bed unit in a Level I Trauma Center. Areas of subspecialty expertise include congenital heart disease and cardiovascular surgery. In this unit, we care for high-acuity patients, and nurses gain hands-on experience with devices unique to this unit. Available advanced treatment modalities include Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO) and ventricular assist devices. We are a fast-paced unit working in an environment of teamwork and inclusion where everyone's input matters.

Schedule

• Full time: Three 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week.
• Day and night rotation: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.; or straight nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

How you will make an impact

• Plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care using the nursing process in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
• Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on each patient's baseline needs and response to care.
• Provide nursing services and education to patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care and the scope of practice defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
• Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
• Assist nursing personnel in the delivery of care and serve as a team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or the unit as assigned.
• Monitor the environment of care and initiate corrective action related to equipment and material resources.
• Serve as a preceptor, support the development of staff and learners, and maintain required competencies through ongoing professional development.
• Identify and participate in clinical and operational performance improvement opportunities and perform other related duties incidental to the work described.

What you will need

• Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program or higher, Associate Degree in Nursing program, or nursing diploma program.
• Registered nurses without a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or higher must enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years of their start date.
• Current registration with the North Carolina Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in North Carolina.
• Current Basic Life Support certification.
• Ability to assess the needs of acute and chronically ill patients and document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations and reevaluations of patient status.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, independently identify appropriate resources and work collaboratively with the healthcare team.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team members, physicians, administrators and leadership.
