This position has multiple openings and is for Whatcom County Jail in Bellingham, WA. Chosen candidates will work 36 hours per week, 6:00 pm–6:30 am.

Job Description

• Must hold and maintain a current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state of employment, as well as a valid CPR card, with a minimum of 1 year clinical experience in a healthcare setting; correctional healthcare experience preferred.
• Accountable to: Health Services Administrator (HSA)/Director of Nursing (DON).
• Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the HSA and DON, the Registered Nurse is responsible for providing direct and indirect nursing care within the scope of the State Board of Nursing Practice.
• Physical Demands: Must have the physical and mental capacity to work in an environment that may be less than pristine, and manage and maintain physical and mental health when encountering stressful situations. Must be able to exert up to 50 lbs of force to push, pull, and move objects, including the human body. Position may require standing or walking while performing duties.
• Performance Expectations:
  • Use knowledge and expertise to ensure nursing processes and systems are followed according to policies, procedures, company performance, and accreditation standards.
  • Work cohesively with the HSA, DON and other functions within the facility.
  • Use all relevant EHR functions with no supervision and assist with staff training as requested.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, peers, and employees at all levels.
  • Respond to and initiate care for medical emergencies, performing continuous CPR until relieved.
  • Take and document patient history and vital signs, assist with examinations and/or treatments, and report changes in patient conditions to the appropriate provider.
  • Assist with daily triage/sick call, minor medical/surgical procedures, and patient assessments.
  • Initiate and document prescribed protocol treatment in compliance with policies.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, executive leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with disaster plans and emergency preparation; enforce all safety and security policies and participate in drills.
  • Observe and evaluate the performance of the licensed practical/vocational nursing staff.
  • Work in accordance with the HSA and Director of Nursing to fulfill contractual requirements for quality healthcare delivery.
  • Comply with continuing education requirements and be mindful of relevant NCCHC Standards.
  • Assist with evaluating the quality and effectiveness of clinical services and aid in developing systems to improve patient care and safety.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, objectivity under pressure, emotional maturity, integrity, and create a positive work environment.
  • Participate in all required meetings per contract compliance.
  • Notify critical information that may impact client or vendor relations or patient care.
