Job summary

Advanced Surgery Center Round Rock in Round Rock, TX, is seeking an OR Circulating Registered Nurse to monitor procedures and assist as a liaison between physicians and OR staff.

The role requires PACU/ASC nursing knowledge, active Texas licensure, and perioperative experience; ACLS is mandatory and PALS preferred. Two years in perioperative nursing is desired. The position is based in a medical office/Ambulatory Surgery Center setting.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
• Current Texas nursing license; ACLS required and PALS preferred.
• Two years’ perioperative nursing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patients for surgical procedures and handles OR prep.
• Works with scrub nurses and surgeon to maintain a sterile field.
• Assesses patient’s condition and addresses needs during surgery.
• Collaborates with physicians and anesthesiologists on care plans.
• Maintains sterile fields and keeps the surgical area clean.
• Removes instruments and sponges as they are used.
• Ensures patient safety during the procedure.
• Maintains precise documentation throughout the procedure.
• Dispenses supplies and medications as needed.
• Handles specimens and special apparatus.
• Adheres to Round Rock Surgery Center policies and procedures.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

Description

The OR Circulating Registered Nurse monitors the procedures in the operating room during surgery and assists as an intermediary between the physicians and operating room staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepares patients for surgical procedures and handles the preparation for the operating room before the surgery


• Works side by side with scrub nurses and directly with the surgeon to help maintain the sterile field in the operating room


• Assesses the patient’s condition and address their needs before and during surgery


• Works with physicians and anesthesiologists to develop a care plan for the patient during surgery


• Ensures all sterile fields are not compromised during the procedure by keeping the surgical area clean and organized


• Removes instruments and sponges as they are used during the procedure


• Ensures patient safety during the procedure


• Keeps precise documentation throughout the procedure


• Dispenses supplies and medication as needed


• Handles specimens and special apparatus


• Adheres to all Round Rock Surgery Center policies and procedures


• Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor


• Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge and experience in PACU nursing or critical care


• Knowledge and experience in ASC, operating room or ASC nursing care


• Competence in assessing, treating and caring for patients based on age-specific needs


• Ability to set priorities and provide direction to others that promotes efficiency on the unit


• Ability to correlate clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care


• Effective communication and positive interpersonal skills


• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality


• Ability to transcribe physicians orders accurately and read labels and instructions completely

Supervision:

Reports directly to the Director of Nursing and Administrator

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing


• Current licensure to practice in the State of Texas, successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course; ALCS required and PALS preferred


• Two years’ experience in perioperative nursing preferred

Physical Conditions

Must be able to work as scheduled. Good visual acuity and accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement. Ability to push a gurney with a 150-pound patient on it. Ability to stand, walk, stop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape. Ability to lift 25-pound instrument trays. Ability to push heavy equipment on wheels within the OR suite. Ability to wear lead apron.
