Summary
The Chief Nurse has responsibility for ensuring safe, high-quality nursing care is delivered to patients of the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System (VAPAHCS). The Chief Nurse ensures the nursing staff provides competent nursing care based on established nursing standards of practice.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency
- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing (ACEN or CCNE at the time of completion).
- OR individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing with coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Nursing, with opportunity for licensure prior to program completion.
- Upon licensure, appointment can be temporary with potential for permanent status after graduation.
- For foreign graduates, current unrestricted registration and degree validation are required.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a nurse in the US or District of Columbia.
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception allows temporary appointment while pursuing licensure.
- Qualifications for Nurse IV include master's or doctoral degrees with relevant experience, and leadership dimensions.
Additional Education and Dimensions:
- Master's in Nursing (MSN) with 4 years of nursing experience, or related degrees with equivalent experience.
- Leadership, Business Acumen, Industry-Leading Lifestyle, Communication, Professional and Social Responsibility competencies are required.
Physical Requirements:
- Visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity, and ability to perform physical tasks.
- Potential exposure to infectious materials and stressful situations.
