As the Registered Nurse Charge Psychiatric, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to youth in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, DJS Health Care Standards and Operational Procedures, and DJS policies. You will perform nursing assessments, administer medications and treatments, respond to youth health needs, and support the delivery of safe, timely, and clinically appropriate care within a behavioral health setting.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute in various ways, including:
Providing Nursing Care – Performing nursing assessments for newly admitted youth, completing admission testing, collecting laboratory specimens, and responding to youth requesting nursing care.
Administering Medications and Treatments – Transcribing physician and nurse practitioner orders and administering medications and treatments in accordance with medical orders while maintaining accurate medication administration records.
Maintaining Clinical Documentation – Documenting youth health records and related logs using timely, accurate, and legally appropriate SOAPE terminology.
Managing Health Information – Entering and maintaining current youth health information in ASSIST and ImmuNet and filing health records in accordance with applicable requirements.
Supporting Health Education – Teaching health education classes to youth as assigned.
Supporting Employee Health – Assisting with employee health initiatives, including PPD testing and vaccinations.
Maintaining Professional Competency – Maintaining required training and continuing education units (CEUs).
Supporting Performance Management – Participating in performance evaluations as assigned.
Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing under the licensing requirements for Registered Nurses.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse, one (1) year of which must have been in the Psychiatric option.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a related field from an accredited college or university for the one (1) year of general experience.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing and Hospital Administration specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
The preferred candidate for this position may possess any of the following:
Experience providing psychiatric or behavioral health nursing care in a juvenile justice, residential, inpatient, or other structured care setting.
Any relevant training or certification in psychiatric nursing, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, de-escalation, or suicide prevention.
Experience with behavioral health medication management, including psychotropic medications, medication monitoring, and recognizing potential adverse effects or clinical changes.

Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.
2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.
