Position Summary
Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions support patient-centered care.
Position Responsibilities
- Performs other assigned duties.
- Utilizes critical thinking and evidence-based practice in providing emergency care for patients of all ages (infant through geriatric).
- Functions effectively in the triage and/or charge nurse role when assigned.
- Prepares patients and equipment for examination and treatment by physicians in a timely manner.
- Ensures appropriate charges are posted for patient care provided.
- Participates in precepting/mentoring new staff, students, and other providers.
- Demonstrates competency and performs EKGs, phlebotomy, and other specialty tasks as assigned.
- Delegates care appropriately to different levels of providers in the emergency department (e.g., paramedic, PCT).
- Organizes individual patient care to enhance efficiency and patient throughput.
- Performs triage, charge nurse, and emergency response duties when assigned.
- Provides discharge education and resources for patients and families.
- Ensures hourly rounding is completed on all patients.
- Completes discharge follow-up calls for continuity of care.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Required Qualifications
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has an active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.
- Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.
- 1 year RN nursing experience or one year emergency services experience.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) verification, or within 90 days of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) verification, or within 1 year of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.
- Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) verification, or within 90 days of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.
- Certification in NIHSS within 6 months of hire.
- Combative Patient Response Team training within 90 days of hire, and must maintain throughout employment.
Organizational Requirements
Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- One Year of Emergency Room Experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Two years of Emergency Department experience.
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training or experience.
- Hazardous Materials Operations Level training.
