Qualifications

Our programs have played a role in countless success stories through our relational approach to behavioral healthcare. The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to adolescents receiving services in a secure, high-acuity behavioral health program operated in collaboration with the North Carolina Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJ). Working under the supervision of the Lead Registered Nurse, the RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care while promoting the physical, emotional, and psychiatric well-being of youth. The RN collaborates with the PMHNP, therapists, case managers, residential staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure safe, trauma-informed, and evidence-based care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessments upon admission to the program and ongoing health assessments throughout each youth's stay, ensuring identification of acute and chronic medical needs, mental health concerns, suicide risk factors, and any health conditions that may impact the youth's safety, treatment, or participation within the secure juvenile justice setting.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, integrating medical, psychiatric, behavioral, and rehabilitative goals to support stabilization, recovery, and successful transition planning for justice-involved youth.
  • Administers medications, treatments, and other prescribed interventions in accordance with provider orders, the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, New Hope policies, Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) procedures, and all applicable state and federal regulations, while monitoring youth for therapeutic effectiveness, adverse reactions, medication compliance, and changes in clinical status.
  • Monitors medication effectiveness, side effects, and adverse reactions.
  • Performs medical and psychiatric triage and responds to changes in youth condition.
  • Provides nursing care during psychiatric, behavioral, and medical emergencies.
  • Implements physician-ordered suicide precautions, self-harm precautions, and enhanced observation protocols.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments of youth on suicide precautions and immediately communicates significant findings.
  • Collaborates with CNAs by assigning delegated nursing tasks consistent with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges, and continuity of care planning.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
  • Educates youth and families regarding medications and health conditions.
  • Reviews laboratory and diagnostic results and communicates abnormal findings.
  • Maintains accurate nursing documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Participates in emergency response activities and approved crisis intervention procedures.
  • Maintains flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency staffing assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the scope of Registered Nursing practice.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred.
  • Current unrestricted North Carolina Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • Ability to pass required background checks, drug screening, and state-mandated employment clearances.
  • Ability to complete New Hope and DJJ orientation and required training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of nursing experience in behavioral health, psychiatry, juvenile justice, residential treatment, crisis stabilization, emergency medicine, or child/adolescent services.
  • Experience working with adolescents with serious emotional disturbance and co-occurring disorders.
  • Experience with electronic health records.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, and respond quickly during emergencies.
  • Ability to safely respond to behavioral and medical crises utilizing approved intervention techniques.
  • May be exposed to verbal aggression, behavioral crises, infectious diseases, and emotionally challenging situations.
