Job Summary
We are seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) Behavioral Medicine to provide psychiatric and mental health nursing care in an inpatient setting. The RN will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care for individuals with dual diagnoses (psychiatric and substance use disorders). This role requires collaboration with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and case managers to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
Responsibilities
- Provide psychiatric nursing care in accordance with ANA Standards of Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nursing Practice
- Conduct patient assessments, develop treatment plans, and administer medications
- Assist with crisis intervention, de-escalation, and suicide prevention measures
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, therapists, and behavioral health professionals
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient documentation using Electronic Health Records (EHR)
- Supervise and provide support to Mental Health Technicians and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Joint Commission, and state regulatory standards
- Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, treatment plans, and coping strategies
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice programs
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an NLN-accredited nursing program (bachelor's degree preferred).
- Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Pennsylvania (required).
- Experience:
- 1+ year of psychiatric or behavioral health nursing experience preferred
- Experience in substance abuse treatment, detox units, or acute mental health settings is a plus
- Certifications:
- Completion of hospital orientation and required certifications.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are a plus.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care
- Ability to manage medication administration, psychiatric emergencies, and crisis interventions
- Strong team collaboration, communication, and conflict resolution skills
- Proficiency in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Requires standing, walking, and direct patient interaction for extended periods.
- May involve lifting, maneuvering, and transporting medical equipment and materials.
- Potential exposure to environmental hazards, infectious diseases, and high-stress situations.
- Must be able to respond to psychiatric crises and participate in physical restraints if necessary.
- Flexible scheduling may be required to meet patient care needs.
