Job Summary

The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient\'s hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient/customer driven approach.

Job Responsibilities and Qualifications

Position Accountability and Performance Criteria

  1. Essential Functions: Performs comprehensive nursing assessment/reassessment with age-appropriate admission/transfer assessment, accurate documentation, and ongoing education/discharge planning.
  2. Establishes, coordinates and evaluates a plan of care based on assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, tests, physician orders, protocols and standards of care.
  3. Provides and documents nursing interventions based on assessed patient needs and changes in status; collaborates with health team members; administers and documents medications; responsible for IV fluids and parenteral nutrition documentation; makes referrals and requests consultations; provides patient/family education and discharge planning; clarifies and implements physician orders; documents readback for telephone/verbal orders.
  4. Specialized Care: Provides care to high-risk patients with specific criteria for restraints, pain management, and abuse assessment as indicated; demonstrates accountability for professional practice and adheres to quality standards.
  5. Safety/Infection Control: Performs job in accordance with safety and infection control policies; maintains safe environment; completes mandatory trainings and certifications; reports variations from care as required.
  6. Service: Delivers service excellence with timely, high-quality care; communicates effectively while maintaining confidentiality; collaborates to ensure continuity of care; provides cost-effective services; upholds hospital commitments (AIDET/One Mission, One Spirit).
  7. Performance Improvement and Evidenced Based Practice: Participates in unit goals, data collection, and improvement initiatives; may participate in nursing research and department-wide performance improvement activities.
  8. Age-Appropriate Care: Provides age-appropriate care with knowledge of growth and development relevant to the patient population served.
  9. Cost-Effective Services: Uses resources efficiently and documents charges; prioritizes responsibilities and utilizes non-clinical time productively.

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Licensed to work as an RN in the state of Missouri

WORKING CONDITIONS: May be exposed to blood-borne pathogens; exposure to accidents, injuries, illness; varying and unpredictable situations; crisis situations; irregular hours.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional prolonged standing/walking; lifts/positions/pushes/transfers; occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.

Standards and Expectations

Standard I: Care quality and excellence; Expectations include infection control, hand hygiene, safety, respectful communication, documentation, teamwork, and professional conduct.

  • Infection control: isolate per policy, educate patients/visitors, up-to-date on SLU Hospital policies, hand hygiene, dressing changes, invasive lines, vaccination, risk reporting, crisis safety practices.
  • Nursing practice: contribute to team function, participate in unit/hospital committees, maintain legible documentation, handoffs, rounding with purpose, mentoring and ensuring licensure/certifications are current.
  • Environment: maintain organized workspace, proper equipment care, and timely handoffs; uphold professional conduct and respectful interactions.
  • Service and communication: introduce self to patients/families, explain procedures, maintain confidentiality, and respond promptly to patient needs.
  • Performance Improvement: engage in improving unit goals, data collection, and evidence-based practice; participate in nursing research as applicable.
