Job summary

Pennington County Jail and Care Campus seeks an experienced Registered Nurse to join the medical team. You will evaluate inmates, deliver comprehensive care, and support security requirements within a professional, disciplined environment.

This on-site role emphasizes collaboration with the Charge Nurse, emergency responsiveness, documentation, and ongoing staff training to ensure high standards of inmate health services.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current South Dakota Registered Nurse License or ability to obtain.
  • 1–2 years of relevant clinical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and identify health problems of inmates, initiate medical records and care plans.
  • Respond to emergencies and take charge until off-site personnel arrive.
  • Prioritize medical needs and assign staff as needed.
  • Administer prescribed treatment and medications within licensing rules.
  • Consult with medical providers on patient care decisions and transfers.
  • Meet with the Charge Nurse to review services; serve as Charge Nurse when needed.
  • Provide medical updates to incoming staff and participate in trainings.
  • Maintain compliance with county policies and complete related duties.

We are currently seeking Registered Nurses to join our team at the Pennington County Jail and Care Campus!

As a part of a larger medical team, the Registered Nurse (RN) evaluates inmates/clients/detainees and provides comprehensive medical care, while observing and maintaining the requirements of security within the Pennington County Jail, Care Campus and Western South Dakota Juvenile Services Center. Medical team members provide inmate/client/detainee services in an orderly, respectful and disciplined manner, consistent with the professionalism expected of all Sheriff's Office employee.

  • Assess and identify health problems of new inmates/clients/detainees, initiate medical records, document findings and establish patient care plans.
  • Respond to emergency situations and take charge until off-site emergency personnel arrive.
  • Prioritize inmate/client/detainee medical needs and assigns staff as needed.
  • Administer prescribed treatment and medication to inmates/clients/detainees at any PCSO facility as needed and medically required, within licensing authorization.
  • Participate in decision making regarding client/inmate/detainee medical care, including the need for transfer to outside medical care; confer with medical providers as needed.
  • Meet with the Charge Nurse to review medical services administered to inmates/clients/detainees.
  • Serve as a Charge Nurse in their absence as assigned.
  • Provide medical update to incoming medical staff prior to shift change.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings and maintain RN license and other certifications as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with all county policies and procedures.

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current South Dakota Registered Nurse License or ability to readily obtain a South Dakota state certification as a Registered Nurse.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Working Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in an office, stock room, jail or juvenile center.
  • This position is exposed to contagious or infectious disease and irritating chemicals.
  • Work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
  • This position will include close interaction with inmates/clients/detainees.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone and in person.
  • Ability to push/pull a medication cart for up to four hours per shift. When fully loaded, the medication cart weights approximately 200 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop, bend, crouch and lift light objects.
  • Must be able to enter data and operate a phone.
