Description

Registered Nurse provides medical services in response to health problems, promotes health and safety; provides case management services; and collaborates with clinical and ancillary staff. This position requires reviewing assessments, logs, and follow-up where necessary; ensuring all medical appointments, tests, and lab work are completed as required; providing 24-hour on-call coverage for emergencies; and assisting with the AMAP certification process.

  • The assessment, planning, implementation, and supervision of medical care for the individuals supported.
  • Provide and supervise comprehensive nursing services and interventions to meet the healthcare needs of individuals. Ensure continuity of care by monitoring nursing activities and supporting staff.
  • Work with physicians to address medical needs and follow through on nursing care provision.
  • Develop and review Nursing Care Plans for each individual.
  • Maintain 24-hour on-call capabilities for reporting on individual status and interventions.
  • Ensure the health, welfare, and safety of individuals by supervising their medical care plans and implementing agency and OPWDD policies.
  • Identify and report medical or emotional difficulties such as seizures, injuries, or behavioral episodes, and implement appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborate with Residence Managers to ensure staff are medically trained and monitor, train, and evaluate med-certified staff as per guidelines.
  • Conduct delegated nursing training and general health/hygiene, infectious disease control, and related topics for staff development.
  • Update MARS monthly and as needed.
Qualifications
Education

BA in Nursing, NYS Licensure as a Registered Nurse, meeting all NYS Office of the Professions requirements.

Experience

RN with 1-2 years OPWDD or mental health experience.

Skills & Abilities

Proficiency in Microsoft Office; ability to train and assist individuals with developmental disabilities in various life skills; valid NYS Driver’s License; willingness to obtain CPR, First Aid, and SCIPR certifications.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 1-year experience with the developmentally disabled population, preferably in residential, health, or treatment settings.
  • Specialized training in direct care preferred; certification in OPWDD-approved medication administration required during probation; ability to physically restrain challenging behaviors.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to communicate clearly, read data and documents, provide physical care, and physically restrain challenging behaviors.
Work Environment
  • Work in environments with noise levels typical of office, health, or residential settings; working with individuals from childhood to adulthood.
Essential Functions
  • Support individuals in maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive environment; promote social and community integration; monitor health and assist with daily living skills; document services and adhere to mandated reporting and ethical standards.
Other Functions
  • Demonstrate professionalism, respect, and enthusiasm for learning; participate positively in organizational tasks; adhere to policies and procedures.
