Description

Registered dental hygienists are licensed professionals responsible for providing dental hygiene services. They implement appropriate standard of care therapy, assist dentists in providing hygiene, periodontal, or dental care and treatment, conduct dental hygiene assessments, develop treatment plans with dentists, and educate patients on oral and overall health care.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Administer local anesthesia (under direct supervision of a dentist; must have completed relevant continuing education or training).
• Administer nitrous analgesia (under direct supervision of a dentist; must have completed relevant continuing education or training).
• Assess patients’ teeth, bones, and periodontal tissues for abnormalities or diseases.
• Co-diagnose with the dentist to develop periodontal treatment plans.
• Identify and report any suspected lesions or abnormalities.
• Remove deposits and stains from teeth using appropriate instruments.
• Educate patients on good oral hygiene practices and recommend suitable products.
• Perform prophylaxis, root planning, and other periodontal therapies.
• Use lasers for periodontal or whitening procedures, provided proper training has been completed.
• Place and remove periodontal packs and locally-administered antibiotics.
• Perform dental x-rays and apply preventive agents like fluoride and sealants.
• Remove cement, make and cement temporary crowns, and recement crowns and bridges as needed.
• Place and remove temporary fillings, remove sutures, and perform other duties as assigned under state laws.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed and in good standing with the State of Florida.
• Possess an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene.
• Current BLS and CPR certification.
• Willing to work collaboratively with the dental team, with good manual dexterity and eyesight.

Working Conditions

Work in clean, well-lit offices following strict infection control protocols. Use protective gear such as masks, glasses, gowns, gloves, and follow safety guidelines. Long hair should be pulled back, and nails kept short and tidy.
