Job description

Job Summary:

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) plays a critical role in supporting the implementation

of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment plans for individuals with developmental and

behavioral challenges. Working directly with learners, the RBT is responsible for delivering 1:1

therapy sessions, ensuring the implementation of treatment programs, and maintaining

continuous engagement through positive reinforcement and behavior modification techniques.

This position requires effective communication with supervisors, maintaining professional

boundaries with families, and accurately documenting session data and behavior observations.

The RBT is expected to maintain a structured environment, follow protocols, and ensure that

sessions are both productive and enjoyable for the learner.

Essential Functions:
Arrival/Departure:
  • Arrive promptly at the start time of each scheduled session (e.g., 9:00am start requires arrival at 9:00am).
  • Ensure timely departure, leaving the session at the exact end time as per the schedule.
  • Prepare programming data and materials within the first 5 minutes of the session.
  • Begin clean-up activities 5 minutes before the session ends (e.g., for a session from 9:00am to 12:00pm, clean-up would start at 11:55am).
Communication:
  • Maintain professional boundaries with parents and families, avoiding discussions of personal matters or sharing personal information.
  • Refrain from engaging in any outside activities with learners receiving direct services.

Notify your immediate supervisor via phone or face-to-face for the following situations:

  • New learners scheduled for sessions.
  • Problem behaviors lasting longer than 5 minutes.
  • Unclear programming or treatment instructions.
  • Concerns from parents.
  • Late arrivals to a session, absences, or illness.
  • Any injuries sustained during a session.
Program Implementation:
  • Execute treatment targets across different settings, including on the floor, at the table, or in outdoor environments.
  • Ensure continuous engagement of the learner, focusing on treatment targets without allowing idle time.
  • Follow all programming as written in the active binder.
  • Apply ABA methodologies during 1:1 sessions with learners.
  • Implement the token economy system, provide reinforcements, contingencies, and corrective responses.
  • Redirect inappropriate behavior and offer alternative responses when necessary.
  • Use prompts (physical, gestural, or verbal) as needed to support the learner.
  • Collect and record data on treatment targets.
  • Engage in play, encourage spontaneous language, and ensure the session remains enjoyable for the learner.
  • Document problem behaviors on an ABC chart and summarize data.
  • Complete session notes in the daily session log.
  • Report any behavioral or parental concerns, as well as injuries, to your immediate supervisor.
Collaboration:
  • Maintain open communication with your immediate supervisor to ensure effective program delivery and adherence to protocols.
Education Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current RBT certification or sitting within the next 30 days from date of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is highly preferred (Psychology, Education, ABA, Behavioral Health, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, etc.)
Physical Requirements:

Physical demands: Under normal circumstances the employee will need to have the physical capacity to continuously use his/her hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulation.

The employee may be required to do the following:

  • Must be able to maintain and assume a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing)
  • Must be able to sit on the floor or stand for extended periods of time
  • Must have manual dexterity in order to perform specific electronic functions for session notes/data collection.
  • Lift/carry 40 lbs (full mobility to pick up and carry the learner or chase after a learner that elopes)
  • Push / Pull up to 25 lbs

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Physical demands may vary for each client. You will be provided with more information if special physical demands are needed for a client.

Environment:

Uneven surfaces, noise, quick work pace. Requires that the incumbent work effectively under stressful situations and respond to the unpredictable behaviors of students.

Frequent use of computer screen. Occasionally involves working outdoors and exposure to inclement weather. Infrequently involves exposure to traffic congestion. May rarely involve exposure to biohazardous waste.
