Position Summary

This position is responsible for operating multiple Veolia contracted client water and wastewater facilities. The primary purpose is to cover vacations and absences at existing facilities, assist in the training and development of local operations teams, and serve in a support role at new account start‑ups. Duties include process changes to meet compliance, troubleshooting processes and equipment, routine, reactive, and preventive maintenance, process and compliance sampling, laboratory testing, and writing and distributing a daily shift report. Between time at designated accounts, the role develops training resources for general water and wastewater industry knowledge and site‑specific treatment training for all technicians in the region. Significant travel is required, sometimes for extended periods (1–2 weeks away from home at a time and up to a month for extenuating circumstances).

Essential Operational Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain complete operational coverage of the Veolia operated facilities in the designated region as vacations and unplanned absences arise, covering both day and night shifts.
  • Assist in the operational development of all local technicians, including in-person hands‑on training visits, development of electronic training materials, and directing individual technician training.
  • Ensure that industry standards and best practices are in use at all Veolia operated facilities.
  • Support new account start‑up projects in collaboration with the Senior Wastewater Operational Technician (SWOT) team.
  • Provide knowledgeable support to local technicians for troubleshooting process issues and ensuring proactive decisions.
  • Operate and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow into the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Collect and test wastewater samples to determine concentration levels and impurities at the designated frequency.
  • Accurately record client data such as chemical residuals, water turbidity, and water pressure.
  • Comply with all Veolia and multiple safety parameters/programs.
  • Analyze lab data to uncover potential treatment issues and implement process changes to prevent non‑compliance.
  • Compile data for the Environmental Protection Agency or state regulatory bodies as needed.
  • Coordinate with other operators to maintain wastewater treatment equipment.
  • Consult with multiple parties to determine the best treatment for their wastewater.
Essential Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with multiple to schedule third‑party maintenance support for projects outside Veolia’s scope.
  • Complete all preventative maintenance defined by Veolia and multiple management at the designated frequency.
  • Assist with all minor maintenance projects to ensure the facility operates effectively and efficiently.
  • Assist with all intermediate maintenance projects to ensure the facility operates effectively and efficiently.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Work with fellow operators on off‑shifts when problems arise.
  • Provide 24/7 availability to operators and multiple management.
  • Communicate frequently with the Veolia Account Manager regarding operation status, compliance, maintenance, and personnel issues.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to the team, exemplifying hard work and attention to detail.
  • Provide direction on daily operation and maintenance to ensure compliance.
  • Facilitate training of operators for all facets of operation and management.
  • Provide clear instructions on equipment operation and maintenance, and maintain facility‑specific SOPs.
  • Continuously optimize plant operation, chemistry, and equipment to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Innovation / Planning / Budget
  • Develop innovative ideas related to process improvements within the job or department.
  • Schedule workload independently.
  • Manage inventories of lab supplies, consumables, and equipment parts; no budget responsibility.
  • Develop creative ideas to improve operation and management of the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Manage maintenance program inventories and equipment parts.
Decision Making
  • Receive assignments with expected results, due dates, and procedures.
  • Make process changes based on lab data and general knowledge.
  • Use independent judgment for common problems; refer unusual cases to supervisor.
  • Discuss significant issues with the account manager to ensure compliance.
  • Evaluate operator skills to assign tasks such as lab analyses and maintenance.
  • Evaluate maintenance projects and coordinate required outside support.
  • Maintain communication and teamwork expectations; cover each other’s absences.
  • Communicate with Veolia management regularly about training progress and site operations.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google equivalent required.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, required.
  • Willingness to learn and take instructions on wastewater treatment processes.
  • Prior experience in a traveling work role preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations or related field required.
Working Conditions

The work environment includes typical wastewater treatment plant and outdoor conditions. The position may involve exposure to extreme weather, chemicals, electrical hazards, loud noises, vibrations, steam, and high moisture. The job holder must lift up to 75 pounds, climb ladders up to 30 feet, stand for long periods, walk on uneven surfaces, bend regularly, and use a forklift and extension ladders. The role requires day, night, and 12‑hour shifts as needed and emergency call‑ins or phone support.
