Job summary

Veolia's Water Technology team in the United States is seeking a Wastewater Operations Technician who will cover vacations and absences across multiple client facilities. The role focuses on operation and maintenance, process changes for compliance, and training local staff, with travel ranging from 1–2 weeks to longer deployments.

You will collect samples, test parameters, manage documentation, and support start-ups.

Job Description

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for operating multiple Veolia contracted client water and wastewater facilities. The primary purpose of this position is to cover vacations & absences at existing facilities, assist in the training and development of local operations teams, and to serve in a support role at new account start‑ups. This position will be responsible for assisting with the overall operation and maintenance of accounts in their area, including process changes to meet compliance, troubleshooting processes & equipment, routine, reactive, and preventive maintenance, process & compliance sampling, laboratory testing, and the writing and distribution of a daily shift report. In between time at designated accounts, this position will develop training resources for general water and wastewater industry knowledge, as well as site‑specific treatment training for all technicians in their region. This role requires significant travel, ranging from 1‑2 weeks away from home to a month for extended circumstances.

Essential Operational Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain complete operational coverage of Veolia operated facilities in your designated region as vacations and unplanned absences arise, covering both day and night shifts with significant schedule flexibility.
• Assist in the operational development of all local technicians within your designated region through hands‑on training visits, electronic training material development, and directing individual training efforts.
• Ensure industry standards and best practices are used at all Veolia operated facilities, including record‑keeping, lab testing procedures, operational practices, and preventative maintenance.
• Support new account start‑up projects with the Senior Wastewater Operational Technician team to develop operational tasks, procedures, and goals, and train newly hired technicians.
• Provide knowledgeable support to local technicians to troubleshoot process issues and ensure proactive decisions are made regularly.
• Operate and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate water flow into the wastewater treatment plant.
• Collect and test wastewater samples to determine concentration levels and impurities at the designated frequency.
• Accurately record client data such as residual chemical content, water turbidity, and pressure.
• Comply with all Veolia and multiple safety parameters/programs.
• Analyze lab data to uncover potential treatment issues and implement process changes to prevent non‑compliance.
• Compile data for the Environmental Protection Agency or state regulatory bodies as required.
• Coordinate with other operators to maintain wastewater treatment equipment.
• Consult with multiples and Veolia management to determine the best treatment solutions.

Essential Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate with multiples to schedule third‑party maintenance for projects outside Veolia’s scope of work.
• Complete all preventative maintenance defined by Veolia and multiple management, documenting each task (e.g., filter changes, oil changes, bearing greasing, temperature monitoring, valve exercise).
• Assist in completing all minor maintenance projects such as chemical pump repair, small PVC installations, valve replacements, AOD pump repairs, and check‑valve cleanouts.
• Assist in completing all intermediate maintenance projects including mechanical pump seal replacement, packing seal replacement, impeller replacement, full PVC line replacement, centrifugal pump replacement, displacement pump replacement, and check‑valve repairs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Be willing and available to work with fellow operators on off‑shifts when problems arise.
• Provide 24/7 availability to wastewater operators and multiple management.
• Communicate frequently with the Veolia Account Manager regarding plant operation, compliance, maintenance, and personnel issues.
• Lead the team by exemplifying hard work, attention to detail, fair treatment, and accountability.
• Provide direction on daily operation, maintenance, process changes, chemical feed rates, and additional sampling to ensure compliance.
• Provide training and facilitate training for operators across all facets of operation and management.
• Deliver clear verbal and written instructions and create and maintain facility‑specific SOPs.
• Continuously optimize operation, chemistry, and equipment to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Innovation / Planning / Budget

• Develop creative or innovative ideas related to process improvements within your own job or department.
• Schedule work independently.
• Manage inventories of lab supplies, consumables, and equipment parts. Do not handle or administer a budget.
• Improve processes related to operations and management of the WWTP.
• Manage maintenance program inventories, consumables, and equipment parts.

Decision Making

• Receive assignments in the form of expected results, due dates, and general procedures.
• Make process changes based on lab data and general knowledge to correct compliance issues or improve treatment.
• Handle common problems independently; refer unusual cases to a supervisor.
• Discuss significant concerns with the account manager to ensure reasonable actions and contract compliance.
• Evaluate operators’ skills to assign tasks such as lab analysis, maintenance, preventive maintenance, chemical inventory management, and waste disposal.
• Determine needed outside support for maintenance projects and coordinate with client maintenance teams or contractors.
• Participate in team meetings and discussions; collaborate regularly with team members.
• Cover each other’s absences to the best of your ability to maintain continuous facility coverage.
• Maintain continuous communication with client and Veolia management.
• Communicate with Veolia management on training progress and overall site operations status.

Qualifications

General Education And Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google equivalent.
• Strong mechanical aptitude.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Willingness to learn and follow instructions on wastewater treatment processes.
• Operational experience with site‑specific equipment.
• At least 3 years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations or a related field.
• Prior experience in a traveling work role.

The job holder could be exposed to extreme heat and cold, burns, chemicals, dangerous systems, dirt and dust, electrical hazards, grease and oil, loud noises, vibrations, steam, and high moisture levels. This position requires lifting and/or carrying up to 75 pounds, climbing a vertical ladder up to 30 feet, standing for long periods, walking on uneven surfaces, regular bending, climbing into and maneuvering body in tight spaces, and using extension ladders daily.

This position requires working both day and night shifts as needed, including 12‑hour shifts, and availability for emergency call‑ins or phone support.
