Job summary

Interpath Laboratory seeks a Regional Technical Consultant with MLS/CLS credentials to design and deliver standardized technical training across its regional sites. You will work closely with the Regional Manager, COO, and Quality Officer to implement programs that ensure staff meet quality and compliance standards.

Additionally, you may serve in CLIA-defined regulatory roles (Technical Supervisor/Consultant) for moderate- and high-complexity labs and support regulatory continuity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in MLS/CLS from NAACLS-accredited program.
  • 4+ years of MLS/CLS experience performing non-waived testing.
  • Laboratory training, technical leadership, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Current MLS/CLS certification or eligibility to sit for exam.

Job description

The Regional Technical Consultant is an experiencedMedical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist who delivers standardized technical training across Interpath Laboratory’s regional sites.

Working closely with the Regional Manager, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Science and Quality Officer, this position develops and executes training programs that ensure technical staff meet Interpath’s quality, compliance, and operational performance standards.

The role also serves in regulatory leadership capacities, including as a CLIA-defined Technical Supervisor, General Supervisor, or Technical Consultant for moderate- and high-complexity laboratories, as directed.

Salary: $79K - $100K annually, depending on experience

Schedule & Travel
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with a one-hour lunch. Schedule may vary based on operational needs.
  • Travel: Regional travel to assigned Interpath laboratory sites is required. Travel frequency and overnight requirements will vary based on operational need and employee home location.
  • After-hours/Weekend Work: Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be required to address urgent operational or training needs.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field from a program accredited by NAACLS or equivalent accrediting body.
Experience
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) performing non-waived testing.
  • Prior experience in laboratory training, technical leadership, or a supervisory capacity is strongly preferred.
Licensure & Certification
  • Current certification as MLS(ASCP), CLS(NCA), MT(AMT), or equivalent nationally recognized credential; or documented eligibility and enrollment to sit for a qualifying examination.
  • Must meet CLIA qualifications at 42 CFR 493.1411 to serve as a Technical Consultant or 42 CFR 493.1449 to serve as Technical Supervisor for high-complexity testing,as applicable to assigned sites.
  • Licensure or registration in applicable states where required by law; multi-state licensure portability (e.g., Washington State MA-P certification under RCW 18.360 / WAC 246-338, where applicable) is required or must be obtained within a defined onboarding period.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of clinical laboratory disciplines including Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Blood Banking, Urinalysis, and Coagulation.
  • Working knowledge of CLIA regulations (42 CFR 493), CAP accreditation standards, and applicable state laboratory licensure requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver adult technical training programs; strong facilitation, coaching, and instructional design skills.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS), Microsoft Office Suite, and multiple operational databases.
  • Competency in or demonstrated readiness to learn and operationalize AI-assisted tools, laboratory automation platforms, and emerging diagnostic technologies; candidates without current AI proficiency must demonstrate a concrete plan and commitment to rapid integration of these capabilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high aptitude for accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate complex technical content for varied audiences.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and hold accountable technical staff across multiple sites and reporting relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across geographically distributed assignments.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record; ability to operate a motor vehicle for regional travel.
What You’ll Do
  • Plan and deliver technical training programs across assigned regional sites, ensuring consistency with Interpath’s laboratory standards and quality objectives.
  • Serve in CLIA-defined regulatory roles as directed, including Technical Supervisor, General Supervisor, or Technical Consultant for moderate- and high-complexity laboratories, in accordance with 42 CFR §493.
  • Accept appointment as Laboratory Director designee for waived-complexity and moderate-complexity sites where permitted by applicable state and federal regulations, supporting operational continuity and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform the full range of laboratory testing provided by Interpath Laboratory, including Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Urinalysis, and Coagulation.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing and testing of collected specimens; evaluate cells and microorganisms using microscopy, assessing shape, size, and color; identify colorimetric distinctions and color differentials in crystals.
  • Operate complex automated laboratory equipment, electronic instruments, computer software systems, and precision analytical instruments.
  • Evaluate test results, recognize clinically significant abnormal values across specific patient population groups, and report laboratory findings to pathologists and other authorized healthcare providers.
  • Develop, modify, and implement laboratory procedures and testing protocols in alignment with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Establish, monitor, and evaluate quality control and quality assurance programs to ensure accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results.
  • Participate in all aspects of proficiency testing, including enrollment, performance, and corrective action documentation.
  • Lead and support the evaluation, validation, and integration of new laboratory technologies, automation solutions, and AI-assisted workflows; actively apply emerging tools to improve training delivery, operational efficiency, and quality outcomes.
  • Travel to assigned regional laboratory sites as operationally required; travel frequency and overnight requirements will vary based on site needs and employee home location.
  • Adhere to HIPAA policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure protection of patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintain and reinforce Interpath’s corporate culture and commitment to laboratory quality across all sites and interactions.
  • Demonstrate a consistently professional, respectful, and constructive approach in all interactions with patients, clients, technical staff, and leadership. Foster a team-oriented environment built on trust, collaboration, and effective communication.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance as an essential function of this position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; Essential functions may evolve in response to operational needs, regulatory requirements, or organizational changes.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position provides functional oversight of technical laboratory staff within assigned training activities. It does not carry direct supervisory authority over permanent headcount but is accountable for the technical competency and performance of staff during training engagements.

Physical Requirements

Medical Laboratory Scientists must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (lab coat, gloves, goggles, face shield) at all times while in the laboratory environment. Employees in this role are regularly exposed to infectious materials through handling of potentially infectious specimens.

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Mobility to climb stairs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to distinguish color differentials and pass a vision acuity test in compliance with CAP regulations.
  • Ability to travel by personal vehicle or commercial carrier across regional distances, including overnight travel as operationally required.

This role operates under OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards; employees are offered the Hepatitis B vaccination series as part of onboarding.

It is our company policy to provide, free of charge, the Hepatitis Vaccine Series for all employees of the company who may be exposed to blood or body fluids.
1. Employees will be counseled upon hire regarding the vaccination series.
2. Upon the signing of the proper form, the employee will begin their series at the next scheduled vaccination day after hiring.
3. The series will be administered by a nurse at a designated clinic or hospital.
4. Documentation will be kept in the employee's permanent Personnel File.
5. When necessary, the Medical Director will determine follow up protocol.
Eligibility for Hepatitis Vaccine will be decided by the employee's supervisor based on their possible exposure to blood or body fluids during job performance, such as (but not limited to): Phlebotomy, Sample handling, Testing, Courier of Specimens, Direct patient contact/care, Janitorial Services.
