Hilco Transport, Inc. is seeking a Regional Safety Manager to develop and run safety programs across our hazardous materials liquid tanker operations. You will oversee DOT/FMCSA/OSHA compliance, conduct audits, and lead incident investigations while coaching drivers and staff.

The role requires hands-on leadership, strong communication, and a track record of improving safety metrics. Expect travel and a focus on training and risk reduction across terminals and shops.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years in Safety/Training in trucking/transportation.
  • HazMat experience is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with DOT, FMCSA, HAZMAT, OSHA compliance.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and investigations to ensure regulatory adherence.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Safety to meet safety goals.
  • Coach and provide ongoing safety training and reviews for employees.
  • Utilize in-cab cameras/telematics to drive safety improvements.
  • Lead safety orientation/training for new hires/drivers.
  • Implement protocols for Drug/Alcohol, Accidents, Incidents, HAZCOM/GHS.
  • Support HR across locations including onboarding and testing.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of employee and company information.

Job description

Reports To: VP of Safety & HR and Director of Central Regional Operations

Purpose: The Regional Safety Manager is a hands on position responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment by developing, implementing, executing, and managing safety programs and training initiatives within our predominately hazardous material liquid tanker industry to include but not limited to: propane, butane, liquid asphalt, nitric acid, ammonia, pentane, condensate, chemicals, dump truck related products and household waste. They play a key role in minimizing workplace hazards, ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting a culture of safety within the organization. He/she will be the main point of contact for employees, Drivers, and Owner Operators with regards to safety issues and will be a reliable resource of information on the company’s training and safety programs. A successful regional safety manager will have a strong background in safety management or supervision, DOT/FMSCA/OSHA regulations, and hands-on industry experience including customer relations. They will also identify and address potential hazards, analyze safety data, and lead incident investigations, ultimately contributing to a safer and more productive work environment for our drivers, terminals and shops. This position requires the ability to use technology as it relates to safety improvement using various telematics data including in cab camera systems.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Assist as needed with Safety Department compliance issues including DOT, FMCSA, HAZMAT, OSHA, etc.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and accident investigations to ensure adherence to federal, state and company regulations.
  • Work with the Corporate Safety Department Staff to ensure Safety goals and compliance.
  • Coach/direct and provide on-going support to employees on safety issues, to include writing and administering safety reviews and/or written discipline.
  • Ongoing coaching using in-cab cameras, telematics, review of safety history to drive safety improvement.
  • Serve as back-up facilitator/trainer for new employee/driver Orientation and Training program.
  • Introduce specific protocols directed to employees specifically: Drug and Alcohol, Accidents, Incidents, Fire Safety, Hazard Communication (HazCom) / Global Harmonized System (GHS)
  • Lead classroom/On-Road instruction, for Smith System Driver Improvement Course
  • Teach familiarity of multiple commodities: propane, butane, liquid asphalt, ammonia, nitric acid, pentane, condensate, and other products as needed.
  • Administer on-line training through LMS Computer Based Platform (eFront)
  • Support HR as needed throughout all company locations to include but not limited to:
  • Onboarding
  • Pre-Employment/Random Drug Testing
  • Special assignments as needed
  • Ensure the appropriate level of confidentiality and security for all employees and company information and property.

Skills:

  • Previous experience of 5 years in a Safety, Training or related position within the trucking/transportation industry.
  • Trucking and hazardous material experience is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail; excellent organization skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both with customers/vendors and internal teams
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to make quick, effective decisions.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing demands.
  • Physical activities include walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, and maneuvering on elevated surfaces.
  • May be exposed to loud noise and other environmental conditions.

Technical Knowledge

  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of safe job practices & regulations related to OSHA/FMSCA/HAZMAT, and DOT requirements.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Hazmat endorsements preferred
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain DOT Drug and Alcohol Certification.
  • Ability and commitment to obtain required clearances/proper identification cards to gain entrance to customer facilities (TWIC, PEC, H2S, Passport, etc.).
  • After-hours availability will be required for critical incidents to include but not limited to:
  • Accidents, incidents, systems issues, etc.
  • Position may require up to 75% overnight travel.
