Job summary

Self-Help is a California-based nonprofit focused on economic justice and opportunity. We seek an experienced Senior HR Leader to serve as a strategic partner to managers, guiding employee relations, performance, and organizational effectiveness across the Vallejo region.

You will collaborate with Benefits, Payroll, and HR Operations, lead investigations and high-risk matters, and support mergers or acquisitions while ensuring regulatory compliance and a strong staff experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field or equivalent related experience; applicable HR certification preferred.
  • 6 years' HR Generalist experience including employee relations, performance management, organizational design, and interpreting complex employment law.
  • Demonstrated success as a strategic HR Business Partner to senior leadership.
  • Experience conducting complex workplace investigations and resolving high-risk employee relations matters.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic HR partner to managers and staff, providing guidance on employee relations, performance management, organizational effectiveness, workforce planning, and People policies.
  • Collaborate with HR Operations, including Benefits and Payroll, to provide guidance on leave administration, accommodations, payroll-related matters, benefits, and other HR processes.
  • Proactively identify staff engagement opportunities and develop action plans.
  • Lead and oversee complex employee relations matters, including investigations, workplace complaints, and high-risk decisions while partnering with Legal as appropriate.
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, and organizational transitions by coordinating HR activities and communicating People policies.
  • Monitor regulations to ensure compliance with ADA, FMLA, FLSA, Title VII, etc.
  • Assist onboarding and policy administration and ensure consistent interpretation across the organization.
  • Respond to Unemployment claims and represent the organization at hearings as needed.
  • Lead, coach, and support assigned Recruiters with strategic direction and hiring metrics.
  • Establish trusted partnerships with managers and staff as an SME in employee relations and People policies.
  • Facilitate training as needed and participate in developing junior HR staff.

WHAT You'll DO :
  • Serve as a strategic HR partner to managers and staff, providing guidance on employee relations, performance management, organizational effectiveness, workforce planning, and People policies.
  • Collaborate with the HR Operations team, including Benefits and Payroll, to provide guidance and support to managers and staff on leave administration, workplace accommodations, payroll-related matters, benefits, and other HR operational processes, ensuring consistent application of policies and a high level of customer service.
  • Proactively identify staff engagement opportunities to improve and enhance the staff member experience and take initiative in developing and implementing appropriate action plans.
  • Lead and oversee complex employee relations matters, including investigations, workplace complaints, performance management, reductions in force, accommodations, and high-risk employment decisions while partnering with Legal as appropriate.
  • Partner with organizational leaders and cross-functional teams to support mergers, acquisitions, and organizational transitions by coordinating HR activities, communicating People policies and processes, and providing guidance and support to managers and staff throughout the integration process
  • Continually monitor changing regulations to ensure region is fully compliant with all local, state and federal regulatory requirements, including ADA, FMLA, FLSA, Title VII, etc.
  • Support onboarding and policy administration by helping design and implement onboarding programs, developing and maintaining People policies, and ensuring consistent interpretation and application across the organization.
  • Respond to Unemployment claims and represent the organization at hearings, as needed.
  • Lead, coach, and support assigned Recruiters by providing strategic direction, removing barriers, monitoring recruiting metrics, and partnering to develop effective talent acquisition strategies that meet the hiring needs of the assigned region.
  • Establish and maintain trusted partnerships with managers and staff across the assigned region, serving as a credible Human Resources subject matter expert and strategic advisor on employee relations, performance management, organizational effectiveness, and People policies.
  • Facilitate training where appropriate and assigned.
  • Lead, coach, develop, and evaluate assigned team members to ensure high-quality support to managers and staff.
  • Participate in special projects as needed and assigned and/or may participate in the development of more junior HR staff, if needed.
WHAT You'll NEED:
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field OR equivalent related experience; applicable HR certification preferred.
  • 6 years' HR Generalist experience including experience in handling employee relations, performance management, organizational design, and interpreting complex employment law.
  • Demonstrated success in managing staff and ensuring team provides the highest level of support to managers and staff.
  • Demonstrated success serving as a strategic HR Business Partner to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting complex workplace investigations and resolving high-risk employee relations matters.
  • Proven ability to influence leaders through coaching and consultation.
  • Commitment to Self-Help's mission of creating economic opportunity and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work as well as juggle multiple projects to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state and federal employment law. Strong knowledge of state and federal employment regulations.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and experience working with HRIS systems. Experience with UltiPro preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work overtime as needed.
