Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) seeks an Environmental Specialist I (S) to manage prescribed fire programs across a regional scope. The role focuses on data and GIS mapping for burn prescriptions, leading burns, and coordinating with partner agencies to ensure safe, compliant operations.

Typical duties include equipment management, field monitoring, and training coordination, with a schedule Monday–Friday, but travel to parks may extend hours.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or related field.
• Experience with prescribed fire planning and NWCG principles is preferred.
• Ability to work with partner agencies and the public to coordinate fire activities.

Responsibilities

• Collect and manage data and geospatial maps for prescriptions, burn units, reporting, and planning.
• Lead prescribed burns and monitor sites before, during, and after operations.
• Support planning and maintenance of fire control lines and equipment.
• Coordinate prescribed fire activities with partner agencies and lands.
• Coordinate NWCG fire trainings and certification for division burn bosses.
• Operate and maintain fire vehicles per division standards.
• Perform wildland fire suppression, mop-up, and mitigation duties as assigned.
