Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, supporting the data centers that keep the cloud running. We work on complex challenges, collaborating with technology, supply‑chain, and operations teams to deliver high performance, environment‑friendly solutions.

We are seeking an Environmental Engineer to support site development and environmental compliance in the Berlin, Germany region. The role involves preparing environmental permits, communicating with authorities, overseeing consultants, and ensuring regulatory compliance throughout Amazon’s global operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and ensure compliance with local and national environmental regulations, contractual obligations, and Amazon policy; represent Amazon at appropriate levels with governmental agencies.
  • Lead environmental permitting processes, including preparation, submittal, and negotiation of permit requirements with environmental authorities.
  • Conduct in‑depth environmental due diligence reviews for new site selection, liaising with internal stakeholders and following established processes.
  • Drive regional environmental programs by integrating with engineering, construction, and operations teams, fostering an environmentally responsible culture while maintaining environmental management processes and external accreditation.
  • Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees is completed in accordance with Amazon standards.
  • Develop, analyze, and present environmental metrics to measure, monitor, forecast performance, and horizon scan for risk; effectively communicate insights to internal stakeholders.
  • Submit time‑critical environmental reports to various governmental agencies.
  • Conduct thorough environmental audits and incident investigations, complete associated regulatory reporting, and develop and implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) in collaboration with operations and relevant stakeholders.
  • Build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify and manage environmental risks early.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple technically complex assignments concurrently.
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations, EIAs, and water discharge requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, or related field with 7+ years serving as an environmental technical resource, compliance specialist, or program manager.
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical abilities with experience in environmental reporting, documentation, investigations, and developing corrective actions.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle regulatory deadlines with strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Strong communication skills in German and English, capable of collaborating with various departments, external stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Required to be a national of an EU member state.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a data center or other critical environment, or in facilities management.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in an environmental field.
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems (ISO 14001).
  • Experience with environmental impact assessments.
  • Familiarity with sustainability reporting and metrics.
  • Knowledge of waste management and circular economy principles.
  • Experience with environmental auditing and compliance verification.
  • Understanding of climate change regulations and carbon reporting.
