Organization Description

Established in 1963, the Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) is a 501(c) non-profit organization. In collaboration with academic partner Colorado State University, ISE delivers the Semester at Sea (SAS) program, one of the longest operating higher education study abroad programs. Semester at Sea provides its students a global comparative education through classroom and experiential learning in the field. The Semester at Sea floating campus, the MVWorld Odyssey,carries around 550 students plus faculty, staff, and others. The duration of the semester voyage is typically 105 days, including visits to 8- 10 countries. ISE conducts two semester voyages annually. See semesteratsea.org for more information.

Position Description

The Regional Director of Enrollment and University Relations is responsible for a designated geographic region. They are responsible for establishing long-term partnerships that support and increase participation in Semester at Sea programs and provide guidance and direction to students interested in applying to the program. The Regional Director is accountable for the prospects/inquiries in their assigned region and for meeting enrollment targets set for their region.

The Regional Direction role is not a traditional “9-to-5” position. During peak recruitment periods, the Regional Director works extended hours, including evenings and weekends, and is responsive outside standard business hours. While the position requires high energy and commitment during travel and recruitment seasons, it offers flexibility and autonomy during off-peak periods.

The ideal candidate thrives in a dynamic, self-directed work environment and brings strong time management, personal accountability, and proactive communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The individual in this position must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

Enrollment (60%)

  • Maintain frequent and consistent communication with prospective students in the funnel. Follow up with leads and advise through the application process.

  • Research, develop, and execute bi-annual recruitment plan informed by historical trends; enrollment and demographic data; college and university goals; and local, regional, and national fair calendars, done so in partnership with the Director of Enrollment & University Relations.

  • Plan and lead small and large-scale recruitment and interest events (in-person and online) that introduce potential students and their families to Semester at Sea.

  • Develop and deliver timely presentations and communications that clearly articulate the program’s distinctive attributes and address common questions and needs.

  • Review admission applications promptly, consistent with departmental policies.

  • Independently manage travel, budget, and daily operations that include student and university meetings, recruitment events, email, text communication, advising appointments, and call campaigns.

  • Mobilize, motivate, and support ISE employees, student volunteers, and alumni assisting with recruitment events.

  • Actively track activities and impact within enrollment CRM (TargetX/Salesforce).

University Relations (30%)

  • Act as the primary point of contact with institutions within your region

  • Build and sustain trust, understanding, and partnerships with a diverse group of university contacts, including study abroad offices and college- and department-level contacts engaged in placing students in international study programs.

  • Responsible for engagement and recruitment activities within the territory including study abroad fairs and other forms of student outreach and engagement; deliver staff training to partner institutions as appropriate.

  • Develop bi-annual strategies for enriching university partnerships, increasing student enrollments, and meeting ambitious key performance indicators – working closely with the Director of Enrollment & University Relations in this development

  • Build and maintain accurate partner records in Salesforce/TargetX with assistance from the Director of Enrollment Systems.Update weekly reports that actively reflect caseload activity and outcomes.

  • Represent Semester at Sea across the region and at designated conferences.

Marketing & Recruitment(10%)

  • Participate in team opportunities and meetings, contributing updates, ideas, and insights aimed at improving recruitment, enrollment, and marketing.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Participate on one of ISE’s strategic priority committees, cross-departmental projects, and groups, and otherwise support organization-wide projects and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail; a high level of personal accountability and self-direction

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; a high degree of resourcefulness and initiative

  • Proven ability to work independently in a remote environment, managing a workload without daily supervision

  • Ability to work irregular hours during high-volume seasons; responsive to communications outside typical working hours

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills paired with administrative organization and follow-through; excellent customer service skills

  • Commitment to working with shared leadership within fast-paced, cross-functional teams

  • Proficiency with software applications

  • Flexibility, open-mindedness, and a positive attitude

  • Support the mission of ISE; reflecting ISE values, candidates are expected to have the ability to advance the SAS commitment to diversity and inclusion

  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Professional experience working with or in study abroad programming

  • Previous personal experience studying or working abroad

  • Experience working remotely and/or in a position requiring extensive travel

  • Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) systems or sales tools (e.g. Salesforce, TargetX)

Working Conditions

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position. Employees, regardless of location, are asked to work Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. MT when not traveling.

  • Frequent domestic travel (approximately 20 weeks per year, heavily concentrated in September-November) is required, often involving overnight, evening, and weekend travel, ranging from single-day school visits to multi-day events.

  • Operation of a rental car is often necessary. International travel may be required. Travel may include time spent on a moving ship in the ocean, with little to no internet access at times.

  • Travel includes two annual trips to the home office in Fort Collins, CO.

  • This is a remote position, however, the Regional Director is expected to reside within 60 miles of a major international airport/metropolitan area within the designated region.

Physical Requirements of the Job

  • Requires sitting, bending at neck, waist, legs, and arms; twisting body; and changing positions at will. Occasional standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching

  • Requires repetitive motions with hands and fingers such as keyboarding, use of telephones, etc.

  • Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus

  • Work requires close attention to detail and accuracy and varies in nature with periodic interruptions

  • Computer and phone work at a desk for majority of the day
