Job summary

Job description

Summary

Utilizes a diagnostic ultrasound machine to obtain the required two dimensional and M-mode views of the cardiac anatomy. Measures the views that have been taken and puts results on paper for the physician to read by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities
  • Operates the cardiac diagnostic ultrasound machine to obtain the required views (50% of time). This includes two-dimensional mode: parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical four chamber, sub-costal and suprasternal views.
  • Performs color-flows and pulsed wave Doppler testing (25%).
  • Performs holter monitoring set up and preferably scanning (25%).
  • Performs EKGs when necessary.
  • Assists with cardiac stress testing, either by running the stress equipment or taking blood pressures, when necessary.
  • Performs other duties within cardiopulmonary services as qualified.
  • Follows policies and procedures for infection control and facility safety in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Presents oneself well-groomed and professional to staff and Medical Center personnel.
  • Participates in facility Quality Improvement/IOP programs as determined by supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensure
  • BLS: Basic Life Support (within 1 month of hire or transfer).
  • ARDMS: Ultrasound Technologist, valid state credentials when applicable.
Required Education
  • Associate’s Degree in sonography.
  • Graduate of a Radiological Technology or Ultrasound Technology program approved by the American Medical Association. Documentation of skills required to perform cardiac ultrasound exams; RDMS or Cardiovascular Credentialing International registry preferred.
  • Basic typing required.
Experience, Training and Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Mandatory TB testing and OSHA training completed annually.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief and death.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required.
  • Must be able to move freely about facility, perform job functions outlined.
  • Overall vision and hearing necessary (with or without assistive device).
  • Required to sit, stand, walk for long periods; may require stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Exposure to blood borne pathogens; must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, feeling; may require repetitive movements.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light. Lift or carry 11–20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently.
