Job summary

Cold Core Group in Cedar Rapids, IA seeks a Refrigeration Project Engineer to lead hands-on engineering, design, and execution of industrial refrigeration and process utility systems, including ammonia and CO2.

This role partners with sales, project management, field teams, and customers to analyze requirements, develop solutions, prepare estimates, and ensure compliance with codes and industry standards; travel to customer facilities as needed.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of industrial ammonia refrigeration engineering experience.
  • Practical knowledge of refrigeration cycles, heat transfer, fluid flow, and psychrometrics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to customer facilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • PE license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support design-build engineering efforts for refrigeration projects.
  • Create, review, and issue drawings, redline markups, and P&IDs.
  • Perform mass and energy balances, heat gain, and equipment sizing calculations.
  • Develop refrigeration system solutions meeting customer needs.
  • Prepare project estimates and support customer proposals.
  • Maintain engineering quality and compliance with codes and standards.
  • Support projects from design through implementation with cross-functional teams.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job description

Role Description: The Refrigeration Project Engineer is responsible for the hands-on engineering, design, and technical execution of industrial refrigeration and process utility systems. This role partners closely with sales, project management, field teams, and customers to analyze, design, and implement systems utilizing ammonia, CO₂, synthetic refrigerants, chilled water/glycol, and steam.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support full design-build engineering efforts for industrial refrigeration projects.
  • Create, review, and issue engineering drawings, redline markups, and P&IDs.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including mass and energy balances, heat gain and product load calculations, and equipment, piping, and valve sizing.
  • Develop refrigeration system solutions that meet customer operational needs.
  • Prepare project estimates and support the development of customer proposals.
  • Maintain engineering quality and compliance by staying current with applicable codes and industry standards.
  • Support projects from design through implementation in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of industrial ammonia refrigeration engineering experience
  • Practical working knowledge of refrigeration cycles, heat transfer, fluid flow, and psychrometrics
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Willingness to travel to customer facilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Hands-on operating or field experience

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

This position involves a combination of office and field work. The successful candidate must be able to perform essential job functions requiring the ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the workday; occasionally lift, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; and travel to customer facilities as needed. Work may be performed in both office and industrial environments.
