In addition to providing engineering support, the Refrigeration Engineer plays a key role in workforce development by delivering technical training, mentoring HVAC technicians, and promoting best practices throughout the manufacturing environment. Success in this role requires a strong foundation in refrigeration principles, hands‑on troubleshooting experience, and the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to employees at varying skill levels.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering & Manufacturing Support
  • Act as the subject matter expert for refrigeration systems used within custom HVAC equipment.
  • Partner with Engineering, Drafting, and Production teams to support the design, assembly, and testing of HVAC products.
  • Review engineering documentation, including drawings, piping layouts, wiring schematics, and bills of material to ensure designs are practical and production‑ready.
  • Provide technical guidance on refrigeration, electrical, and mechanical system integration.
  • Assist in resolving manufacturing challenges by identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Support product testing, startup activities, and validation of refrigeration system performance.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and internal stakeholders to address technical concerns and evaluate component improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute recommendations that improve reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline production processes and enhance overall product quality.
Technical Training & Workforce Development
  • Lead technical training programs for HVAC technicians and production employees.
  • Deliver both classroom and hands‑on instruction covering refrigeration theory, system operation, installation practices, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Train employees on brazing, piping installation, electrical wiring, refrigeration component installation, and system commissioning procedures.
  • Demonstrate and reinforce industry best practices for pressure testing, nitrogen purging, evacuation procedures, refrigerant charging, and oil management.
  • Teach employees how to interpret engineering drawings, refrigeration schematics, and electrical diagrams.
  • Assess technician capabilities and provide individualized coaching to support skill growth and career development.
  • Support onboarding efforts by helping new employees develop foundational refrigeration knowledge and practical skills.
  • Partner with supervisors and production leaders to identify training priorities and close skill gaps within the workforce.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve training materials, work instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Promote a culture of safety through training on refrigerant handling, equipment operation, and regulatory compliance.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for complex refrigeration and HVAC system issues.
  • Support quality initiatives by investigating defects, identifying trends, and implementing preventive measures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects focused on safety, quality, efficiency, and technician development.
  • Help establish and maintain standardized work practices related to refrigeration system assembly and testing.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional work environment that supports both production and training activities.
  • Contribute to cross‑functional projects and perform additional responsibilities as business needs require.

Success Factors:

  • Strong understanding of commercial and industrial refrigeration systems.
  • Ability to effectively train, coach, and mentor technicians.
  • Hands‑on troubleshooting and diagnostic expertise.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to balance technical support responsibilities with employee development initiatives.
Requirements
  • Bachelor or technical degree in HVAC, Refrigeration Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred. Associate’s degree required. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • EPA Certification required.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and refrigeration schematics.
  • Experience supporting HVAC equipment manufacturing or system assembly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks preferred.
  • Experience with HVAC controls, DDC, or BAS systems is a plus.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, train, and develop technical employees.
