Job description

Responsibilities

Recreational Therapist (RT) - Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS)

Full-Time position with Comprehensive Benefits, Generous Paid Time Off, and Competitive Pay.

Liberty Point Behavioral Healthcare is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley—a region renowned for its natural beauty—in the charming city of Staunton, Virginia. We provide trauma-informed psychiatric residential treatment to adolescent males facing complex emotional, behavioral, and educational challenges. Our programs are tailored for youth with psychiatric disorders and co-occurring intellectual disabilities, with a specialization in autism spectrum disorder. We operate a 42-bed facility aimed at preparing young men for reintegration into their homes, less restrictive settings, or independent living. Our primary focus is fostering constructive change, personal growth, positive behavior, responsibility, problem-solving, and healthy relationship development.

In addition to our residential treatment center, we recently launched an offsite PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) in Staunton for both male and female adolescents. This intensive treatment setting serves youth needing more support than outpatient care but less than full residential care. The Rec Therapist will provide daily therapy to PHP patients alongside RTC patients.

Position Description:

The Recreational Therapist will plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate clinical recreation therapy/treatment for residents and/or patients at Liberty Point. Utilizing specialized recreation therapy techniques, the therapist will address the physical, social, emotional, cultural, and rehabilitative needs of patients. The role involves collaborative decision-making within a multidisciplinary treatment team.

Essential Duties:
  • Develop individualized therapeutic strategies for assigned patients and document on the master treatment plan within 10 days of admission
  • Conduct goal-oriented recreation therapy groups
  • Document progress notes for each intervention, ensuring compliance with standards (Virginia Medicaid, TriCare, etc.)
  • Prepare discharge plans for recreation therapy for each patient
  • Coordinate transportation and supervision for outings
  • Gather input from staff for weekend, holiday, and vacation activities
  • Engage in activities that promote professional growth
  • Be accessible and visible to staff during work hours
  • Support the quality and comprehensiveness of the resident Activity and Recreation Program
  • Ensure effective communication of activities and events
  • Assist and educate staff about activities
  • Demonstrate, teach, and instruct residents in activities
  • Supervise and care for intellectually disabled adolescents in residential settings
  • Provide positive interventions, limit-setting, problem-solving, and guidance
  • Maintain accurate, clear documentation
  • Follow treatment plans and interventions diligently
  • Respond professionally and compassionately to children, maintaining boundaries
