Job summary

The City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking a part-time Facilities Worker to perform manual and semi-skilled tasks in maintaining City-operated pools. The role involves chemical testing, deck and tile cleaning, equipment setup and operation, and support for events under the supervision of a higher-level employee.

Ideal candidates have one year of aquatic facility maintenance experience, a valid CPO or AFO certificate, and CPR/First Aid.

Qualifications

• One year paid experience in maintenance or operation of a commercial aquatic facility.
• Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO).
• American Red Cross CPR & First Aid certification within six months from date of employment.
• If assigned to Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex (FLAC), basic SCUBA certification within six months from date of employment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct chemical tests for pool water quality and monitor temperatures.
• Maintain daily pool maintenance and chemical usage logs.
• Clean and maintain pool deck areas, tiles, and related equipment.
• Assist with pool equipment setup and breakdown for programs or events.
• Assist with placement and removal of pool blankets.
• May operate pool filtration equipment and related machinery.
• May operate gas-powered pressure cleaners and handheld tools as assigned.
• Water plants and maintain landscaped areas as needed.
• Supervise setup/takedown of benches and other equipment.
• Perform minor repairs on equipment and municipal buildings.
• May work evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays.
• General related duties as required.

This is a temporary part-time position with a 32-Hour cap per week in accordance with City of Fort Lauderdale Policy and Standards Manual. This position is At-Will and is not covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement or the Personnel Rules.

An employee in this class may be responsible for building and grounds maintenance in an assigned area. Work is normally performed under the general supervision of a higher classified employee who issues written and oral instructions. Work is reviewed by the immediate supervisor; constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks.

Essential Job Functions

• Conducts chemical tests for pool water quality and monitors pool water temperatures
• Maintains daily maintenance and pool chemical usage logs
• Maintains and cleans pool deck areas, brushes pool surface areas and cleans tiles, pool equipment and components such as skimmers, gutters, ladders and railings
• Assists with pool equipment and operational set up/break down for recreational programs and/or special events
• Assists with placement and removal of pool blankets
• May operate and clean pool filtration equipment
• May operate gas powered pressure cleaner and various handheld power tools in conjunction with job assignments
• May water, weed and maintain landscaped areas
• May supervise and participate in the setting up and taking down of benches, seats, chairs and other equipment
• May perform minor repairs on equipment and municipal buildings including lubrication of equipment
• May work staggered hours which may include evening hours
• May work weekends, nights and holidays
• May assign and issue tools, maintain shop area and equipment
• Performs related work as required.

Job Requirements, Preferences & Work Environment

• Have one (1) year paid experience in the maintenance or operation of a commercial aquatic facility
• Have a current Certified Pool Operator's Certification (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)
• Must obtain an American Red Cross CPR & First Aid certification within six (6) months from date of employment
• If assigned to Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex (FLAC), Must obtain basic SCUBA certification within six (6) months from date of employment

As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

Physical Standards Required To Perform Essential Job Functions

The position involves light physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderately loud. The work entails sedentary work in an office setting. While performing duties, employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, talk, hear, reach above and below shoulders, and use hand and fingers dexterity keyboarding. Sometimes work is stressful when working under stringent time constraints. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception. May work in adverse weather conditions such as heat and humidity.
