Responsibilities

Horizon Health, the national leader in the management of inpatient behavioral health programs, together withCarolinaEast Health System in New Bern, NC, seeks a PRN Recreational Therapist for our inpatient, Behavioral Health Program.

The Recreational Therapist is responsible for providing high quality patient care, displaying good skills in assessment, treatment planning, group and individual treatment. Additionally, they are responsible for functioning well as a member of the multidisciplinary team and participating in the community relations program. The recreational therapist is expected to adhere to all ethical standards, codes of conduct, and licensing requirements as well as uphold client confidentiality and privacy rights.

This position may have contact with patients who have moderate to severe psychiatric concerns and/or behavioral issues. There is the possibility this position could be exposed to violent behavior from patients and/or behavioral issues as part of their daily duties.

Assessment And Evaluation:

  • Performs Activity Therapy Assessment on assigned patients within 72 hours of admission
  • Identifies patient’s ability to utilize leisure time in a healthy, productive manner.
  • Actively participates in the development of the Master Treatment Plan by presenting pertinent information and conclusions identified through the assessment and incorporating therapeutic interventions.

Therapeutic Interventions:

  • Develops realistic and measurable goals and desired outcomes incorporating patient and family goals, when appropriate.
  • Identifies and prioritize objective, functional and observable therapeutic interventions based on assessment, identified issues and estimated length of stay.
  • Completes designated portion of multidisciplinary continuing care plan.

Crisis Intervention:

  • Offer crisis intervention and support to clients in acute distress.
  • Assess risk factors and make appropriate referrals when necessary.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Accurately and thoroughly documents assessment and patient activity using appropriate clinical terminology.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and assessments.
  • Prepare and submit required reports in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.

Client Education:

  • Educate clients about mental health conditions, treatment options, coping strategies and self-care techniques.
  • Promote mental health awareness and prevention within the community.

Collaboration and Consultation:

  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers, to coordinate care.
  • Consult with colleagues on complex cases and treatment approaches.
  • Collaborate with court systems when necessary.
  • Is a member of the Referral Development Committee. Effectively participates in the referral development process.Performs other duties as assigned/required by this position.

Qualifications

Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a therapeutic concentration required.
  • Licensed/certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation required (CTRS) within 9 months of hire.
  • Oklahoma Medical Board License preferred; however, may work under supervision with temporary letter until final approval from medical board.
  • BLS required.
  • Minimum one year of experience required; three years of experience preferred.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required

  • Knowledge of group leadership skills, age specific growth and development, crisis and behavior management.
  • Must be able to communicate successfully, both orally and written, to a variety of internal and external customers, while maintaining a professional and pleasant demeanor.
  • Must be able to solve problems independently. Must have the ability to focus and perform effectively under stress and with multiple priorities. Must be able to make sound, independent decisions pertaining to job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to respond to patient/customer needs by interpreting facial expressions and verbal communications.
  • Physical agility to manage patients. Ability to push, pull and lift up to 40 pounds. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping.
  • Understands and adheres to the mission, value statement, and behavioral standards of the facility. Operates within the concept of patient-focused care.
  • Participates as an effective team member. Maintains knowledge of and adheres to facility policies and procedures, including dress code, grooming, and personal hygiene, as well as attendance.
  • SECURE training required within 60 days of hiring, renew annually thereafter.
  • Ability to read and comprehend moderate to complex instructions and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients and their families, Program leadership, employees, clients, providers, vendors, etc.
