The City of Carlsbad seeks a Recreation Supervisor I/II to lead recreational programs at aquatic facilities. The role involves supervising staff, planning activities, and ensuring high-quality public service. The Department: The Parks & Recreation Department of the Community Services Branch provides leadership, planning, and administrative services to help develop and sustain quality parks and recreation programs. The department offers a wide range of programs and services for youth and adult sports, instructional classes, camps, aquatics, preschool, teens, seniors and special events. The department operates and maintains four community centers, a senior center, two aquatic centers, two historic sites, 13 community parks/school fields, two dog parks, two skate parks, 28 special use areas/neighborhood parks, 12 facility landscapes, 10 beach accesses, 43 miles of trails, 715 acres of habitat preserves and natural open space, all city-wide street trees, 71 acres of future parkland, all city street trees, 68 acres of street median planters and 9 acres of street parkways.
The department is a leading provider of world-class projects, programs, events that strengthen and build community connectivity and has a robust Capital Improvement Program, which includes projects for parks' retrofits, infills, and new developments.
The Position: Under general supervision from the Recreation Area Manager, the Recreation Supervisor I/II performs professional recreation work in a variety of recreational programs of the city; plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises a variety of recreational activities, special events, and community programs and services at City of Carlsbad aquatic facilities. In addition, the Recreation Supervisor I/II leads and supervises both full-time and various part-time staff in assigned programs.
The City of Carlsbad is currently looking to fill the role of Recreation Supervisor I/II at the Alga Norte Aquatic Center and Monroe Street Pool. The ideal candidate will possess:
Recreation Supervisor I: This is the entry-level class in the Recreation Supervisor series. Employees in this classification normally work under close supervision performing more routine tasks and duties assigned to position within the series. Work is usually observed both during its performance and upon completion and fits an established structure or pattern. Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skill level as the Recreation Supervisor II level.
Recreation Supervisor II: This is the journey level classification in the Recreation Supervisor series before management level. This classification works under general supervision and incumbents are expected to perform a variety of duties with only occasional instruction or assistance. Adequate performance at this level requires knowledge of departmental procedures and policies, maintaining compliance, and the ability to work independently and offer alternative solutions in solving problems and in achieving greater effectiveness. Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the Recreation Supervisor I level.
Salary Range:
Recreation Supervisor I: $32.23 - 39.20 per hour
Recreation Supervisor II: $35.60 - $43.30 per hour

Any combination equivalent to the experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in recreation or a related field.
Two years of professional experience involving the development and supervision of a variety of recreation programs for all age groups.
The Recreation Supervisor II will demonstrate the following in addition to the above:
Four years of professional experience involving the development and supervision of a variety of recreation programs for all age groups, including two years as a Recreation Supervisor I or an equivalent classification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
As a condition of employment, satisfactory completion of First Aid and CPR/AED certificates are required.
When assigned to an Aquatics Facility, the following certificates shall also be required within six months of appointment:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Incumbents frequently drive to site locations, attend outdoor activities and events and occasionally be required to physically exert themselves (run, walk, stoop, bend, reach) in the supervision of recreational activities. Some positions may occasionally require incumbents to lift or move moderately heavy equipment, or materials during the course of duties assigned. This position may also require frequent exposure to the weather during the course of performing the essential duties.
