Job summary

The City of Somerville is seeking a Parks & Recreation Supervisor to oversee year‑round programs for children, adults, seniors and participants. You will supervise SPR Counselors and Aides and coordinate program schedules, safety rules and field use for events.

Strong leadership, communication and computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) are required, with a high school diploma and at least five years in recreation or a related field. First Aid/CPR and AED training will be provided.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required; college/university major preferred in recreation, sports management, education, or physical education.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in recreation or similar field or equivalent education/training.
  • First Aid/CPR and AED (training provided)
  • Knowledge of recreational modalities, city programs, and project planning
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both oral and written; maintain records; handle confidential information
  • Ability to operate a computer and interact with staff and public

  • Supervises and assists with setting up and cleaning facilities for events, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Maintains safe, open environments for SPR participants.
  • Communicates emergency and non-emergency situations with parents, participants, and staff.
  • Monitors facilities for safety and compliance; reports concerns to Coordinator or Developer.
  • Provides guidance and acts as a positive role model for SPR participants, counselors, and aides.
  • Performs day-to-day supervision of counselors and aides and assists with scheduling and coverage.
  • Reports issues or concerns to Recreation Program Coordinator.

Statement of Duties

The Parks & Recreation (P&R) Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of recreational activities year-round. This includes activities for children, adults, seniors, and other participants. The P&R Supervisor will oversee the P&R Counselor and P&R Aide. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Works independently and collaboratively in overseeing a variety of Parks & Recreation activities and providing quality programming.
  • Supervises and/or assists with setting up and cleaning up facilities after use for special events, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Maintains an environment that facilitates an open and safe space for all Parks & Recreation participants.
  • Communicates emergency and non-emergency situations with various stakeholders (such as parents, participants, and staff).
  • Monitors facilities for safety and compliance. Reports any concerns to the Program Coordinator or Program Developer.
  • Provides guidance and support and acts as a positive role model for all Somerville Parks & Recreation (SPR) participants, SPR Counselors and SPR Aides.
  • Supervisory duties include day-to-day supervision of SPR Counselors and Aides, including but not limited to assisting the Program Coordinator with scheduling and coverage, enforcing rules to staff and participants if necessary.
  • Report any issues or concerns that may arise to Recreation Program Coordinator.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma required; strongly preferred for applicants to be enrolled in a college or university majoring in recreational studies, sports management, education, or physical education. Minimum of 5 years of work experience in recreation or a similar field; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Special Requirements: First Aid/CPR and AED (training will be provided to incoming employees)

Knowledge: Knowledge of a variety of recreational modalities. Knowledge of the scope and goals of the City's recreational programs. Knowledge of principles involved in recreational programming and project planning. Knowledge of sports, recreational activities, and the arts.

Ability: Ability to meet and deal with the public effectively and appropriately; ability to handle problems effectively; ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to operate a computer; ability to maintain confidential information; ability to maintain, manage, and organize records; ability to deal appropriately with employees, officials, and members of the public.

Skill: De-escalation, mediation, and supervisory skills. Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Experienced in utilizing Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel & Outlook). Interpersonal skills necessary to interact successfully with a wide range of individuals.

Work Environment

The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments. Work in the field involves regular exposure to outside elements.

Physical Skills

Minimal physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. Work requires some agility such as moving in or about athletic fields, ice rinks, or over rough terrain. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as recreational equipment, office equipment or photocopy paper (up to 30lbs).

Motor Skills

Duties are both mental and physical, the job may occasionally require motor skills for activities such as moving objects, interacting in recreational activities, operating a telephone, personal computer and/or most other office equipment including word processing, excel, filing and sorting of papers.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require constantly reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
