The City of Takoma Park Recreation Department is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented, and creative Recreation Programs Coordinator to oversee senior citizen programs (55+). This role involves planning, organizing, and facilitating a variety of community and specialized activities, requiring experience working with the 55+ population. The coordinator will serve as a key member of the department, demonstrating professionalism, strong communication skills, and a positive work ethic when engaging with the community and staff.The position requires flexibility in scheduling, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and non-traditional hours. It may also involve physical tasks and working outdoors in various weather conditions. Additionally, the coordinator may need to attend meetings or perform duties at locations outside the assigned facility. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position reporting to the Recreation Manager II and is subject to membership in the AFSCME union.The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between$28.80-$33.92and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate.




Typical Duties:



  • Plans, organizes and implements daily programs designed for senior citizens (55+).

  • Assists customers, especially seniors who come to the Recreation Department Office for information and registration.

  • Evaluates senior needs and interests for recreational, cultural and educational programs then develops and implements approved programs to meet these needs. Auditing programs to ensure quality and registration counts.

  • Recruits, trains and supervises instructors and volunteers.

  • Plan, project and manage senior specific budget; recommends annual budget in consultation with supervisors; manages allocated funds according to City guidelines; reports on financial operations; researches and applies for appropriate grants or other funding in support of department activities.

  • Prepares, edits and publishes quarterly newsletter regarding senior programs and activities.

  • Establishes effective communication with seniors, other communities, senior organizations and associated state & local agencies; coordinates programs with other stakeholders, inside and outside the department.

  • Promote and market departmental offerings through flyers, eblasts, social media, etc and involvement in outside community activities.

  • Complete financial transactions, track registrations, enter classes and programs using computer registration software.

  • Answers phones, registers members for programs.

  • Sets up/breaks down rooms for programming and functions.

  • Complete Defensive Driving Course and drive as needed for the Recreation Department.

  • Other duties as assigned.



Knowledge Skills and Abilities:



  • General knowledge of recreation programming and management experience; preferred recreation program experience with seniors.

  • General knowledge of community resources and organizations.

  • Skilled in planning and problem solving with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Skilled in written and oral communication.

  • Must have strong computer and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Able to provide mature leadership, have fun, be flexible and share enthusiasm.

  • Must be able to interact effectively with all age levels, abilities and cultural backgrounds.

  • Must enjoy working with seniors and retirees



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Applicants must possess or have the ability to possess standard Bloodborne Pathogens, CPR-AED/First Aid certifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must be able to lift/carry 25 lbs. with or without accommodation
