Job summary

The Missouri Department of Corrections invites applications for a Recreation Officer to assist in planning and conducting a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities for inmates and residents within the correctional system.

You will help organize sports and fitness programs, lead group activities and provide instruction while ensuring safety and compliance with facility policies. A strong commitment to community safety and inmate rehabilitation is essential.

• Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

• Assists in conducting and overseeing a variety of indoor and outdoor activities/games/sports; organizes films, group activities, seasonal programs and events.
• Provides individual/group instruction in fundamentals and rules of activities.
• Issues recreation equipment; maintains records; inspects equipment and aids in maintenance of facilities.
• Observes participant behavior; submits reports; work is overseen by a Recreation Officer.

Job description

The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $1.50 per hour maximum security differential ($3,120 annually) for all full-time positions domiciled in a maximum-security institution.

• Assists in conducting and overseeing a variety of indoor and outdoor activities/games/sports such as baseball/basketball/gymnastics/calisthenics/chess/ping-pong; assists in making arrangements/ preparing for movies, group activities, special seasonal programs, competitive events; participates in organizing athletic events/shows/other outside recreation activities
• Provides individual/group instruction in the fundamentals and rules of various activities
• Issues recreation equipment; maintains records of issuance and inspects the condition of equipment when returned; participates in the selection and requisition of recreation equipment; assists in the care/ maintenance of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities
• Observes behavior/reaction of participants in activities; provides reports to a higher-level Recreation Officer; receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed through observations; performs other related work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

• A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
• A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years! If you are transferring from another State of Missouri agency and are receiving state retention pay, please be advised that the Missouri Department of Corrections administers retention based upon your retention anniversary date. As a result, your retention pay upon transfer may differ from what you were receiving at your previous agency until you reach your applicable retention anniversary date.
