Job summary

The Missouri Department of Corrections is hiring a Recreation Officer to assist in planning and delivering indoor and outdoor activities for residents, including sports and group programs. You will organize events, issue equipment, and help maintain facilities to ensure safe, engaging recreation.

Minimum qualifications require being at least 18 years old. The agency offers strong benefits and pay differentials up to $1.50 per hour for maximum-security duties, plus training and advancement

Responsibilities

• Assists in conducting and overseeing indoor and outdoor activities/games/sports such as baseball, basketball, gymnastics, calisthenics, chess, ping-pong and helps prepare for movies, group activities and seasonal programs.
• Provides individual/group instruction in fundamentals and rules of various activities.
• Issues recreation equipment, maintains records of issuance and inspects equipment, and assists in care/maintenance of recreation facilities.
• Observes participant behavior and provides reports; performs other related work as assigned.

Job description

The annual salary listed for this position includes the additional $1.50 per hour maximum security differential ($3,120 annually) for all full-time positions domiciled in a maximum-security institution.

• Assists in conducting and overseeing a variety of indoor and outdoor activities/games/sports such as baseball/basketball/gymnastics/calisthenics/chess/ping-pong; assists in making arrangements/ preparing for movies, group activities, special seasonal programs, competitive events; participates in organizing athletic events/shows/other outside recreation activities
• Provides individual/group instruction in the fundamentals and rules of various activities
• Issues recreation equipment; maintains records of issuance and inspects the condition of equipment when returned; participates in the selection and requisition of recreation equipment; assists in the care/ maintenance of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities
• Observes behavior/reaction of participants in activities; provides reports to a higher-level Recreation Officer; receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed through observations; performs other related work as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

• A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
• A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years! If you are transferring from another State of Missouri agency and are receiving state retention pay, please be advised that the Missouri Department of Corrections administers retention based upon your retention anniversary date. As a result, your retention pay upon transfer may differ from what you were receiving at your previous agency until you reach your applicable retention anniversary date.
