Job summary

The City of Bell Gardens Recreation & Community Services Department seeks a Recreation Leader II - Lifeguard to ensure the safety of pool patrons and supervise pool activities. This is a recurrent, part-time, as needed position with shifts including mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays.

You will enforce pool rules, perform rescues, CPR/First Aid, and assist in swim classes while keeping records and assisting with maintenance.

Qualifications

  • One or more seasons of lifeguard or swim instructor experience.
  • Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting.
  • Some leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activity experience is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure pool safety and rescue swimmers in danger; enforce pool rules and monitor activities.
  • Apply CPR/First Aid and keep logs and reports of emergencies.
  • Assist in teaching swimming; organize and instruct swim classes; maintain pool cleanliness and routine maintenance.

RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

The City of Bell Gardens Recreation & Community Services Department's vision is to create community through people, parks, and programs. Our department is led by a diverse and knowledgeable staff that truly loves recreation and giving back to the community they serve. The City of Bell Gardens is seeking highly motivated and public service-oriented individuals for the position of Recreation Leader II - Lifeguard.

SCHEDULE

This is a recurrent, part-time, as needed position. Hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

DUTIES

Under general supervision, provides for the safety of persons using the City swimming pool and related areas; to aid persons in danger; enforce pool safety rules and regulations; Monitor swimming and other pool activities; Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning; Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid; Inspect swimming pool for cleanliness and perform routine maintenance; Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepare written reports of these activities; Assist in teaching swimming techniques and perform related work as required. Organizes and instructs swim classes; observes swimmers and pool area; enforces facility regulations, policies and procedures; detects and prevents unsafe situations by enforcing pool facility rules and performing regular maintenance; maintains order and discipline at the pool facility; promotes safety of pool patrons; conduct chemical tests of water and keep routine records of test results and chemicals used; may assist cashier; and perform other work related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • One or more seasons of experience as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.
  • Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting is preferred.
  • Some direct experience in leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activities is highly desirable.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older at the time of application and in the eleventh grade or higher. All students under the age of 18, who have not completed his/her high school graduation requirement must submit a valid Work Permit.
LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATE(S)

The City will offer certification and re-certification training

Possession of the following current certificates at time of appointment:

  • Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard, or advanced);
  • Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR; and
  • Red Cross Lifeguard Training at time of hire.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must have knowledge of: lifesaving techniques, principles and practices; policies, rules and regulations governing conduct and safety of persons using the pool; first-aid principles and practices; methods, materials and equipment involved in maintenance and operation of swimming pools. Must have ability to: rescue drowning swimmers and administer artificial respiration and first aid; supervise conduct of pool patrons and maintain order in a tactful manner; use life lines, rings and other safety equipment; follow written and oral instructions; and maintain accurate records. Must have skill in: reading and writing and maintaining and cleaning pools. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; team oriented; skilled in First Aid and CPR. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.
