About Millbrae

The City of Millbrae is located in San Mateo County on the northern San Francisco Peninsula, immediately west of the San Francisco International Airport. The City covers 3.25 square miles primarily between the Bayshore (101) and Junipero Serra (280) Freeways. Millbrae is a suburban, residential community that is essentially built out with 70% of the City's 8,200 dwelling units comprised of single-family units.

Millbrae retains its "small town" feel while its economy continues to expand, as it remains linked to the growing airport and related tourism. The City planned a major downtown revitalization with the arrival of the new San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station.

A five-member City Council elected to four-year overlapping terms governs the City Government, incorporated in 1948. The City Council appoints the City Manager who serves as the City's chief executive officer. Millbrae is a general law city. Department Heads are appointed by the City Manager. The City is organized into the following departments, which provide direct City services: Community Development, Finance, Administration, Administrative Services, Recreation, and Public Works. Administration includes the executive and legislative offices as well as legal services. Administrative Services includes Human Resources and the City Clerk. The City contracts with the San Mateo County Sheriff's office and Central County Fire for police and fire services.

Description

Definition: Under supervision, to provide leadership to recreation programs, activities or service; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants; and performs related work as required. This temporary part-time non-benefited position works an average of 8 -15 hours per week during each sports season. This position requires afternoon and evening shifts.

Essential Duties: Depending upon assignment, the duties of an After School Coach - Recreation Leader I , II or III may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assists in planning, organizing, scheduling and provides direct leadership to classes in a specialized phase of the recreation program, class or activities.

  • Organizes, inventories and maintains necessary facilities and materials.
  • Maintains group and individual discipline, and code of conduct.
  • Implements a logical detailed sequence of activities to fit the abilities and interest of the participants.
  • Keeps records of attendance, participation.
  • Typical duties include: implementation of sports programming, record keeping, maintaining supplies, class development, and gym supervision.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Special Requirements: Vision adequate to supervise participants in recreational programs; speak clearly; ability to bend stoop or crouch; physical stamina to supervise groups of youth participating in recreational programs; ability to work off-hours, shifts or events as required; strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds; and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages;
  • Rules and techniques of common sports and games;
  • Principles and methods used in organizing, conducting and supervising a program of recreational activities;
  • Record keeping techniques;
  • Basic first aid and safety practices and procedures;
  • Customer service including greeting guests and providing recreation activity information.
  • Recreation organization and implementation

Ability to

  • Implement and organize recreation program elements;
  • Prioritize and handle multiple program tasks;
  • Think and act quickly in emergencies;
  • Judge situations and people accurately;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and the public;
  • Perform work in a safe manner;
  • Perform the physical duties of the job.

Education & Experience

Recreation Leader I: Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 15 at time of appointment. Must possess a work-permit. No previous experience required.

Recreation Leader II: Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 16 at time of appointment. Equivalent to three (3) months of full-time experience (approximately 500 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience in recreation programs or equivalent. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

Recreation Leader III: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade. Equivalent to six (6) months full-time experience (approximately 1,000 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience equivalent to a Recreation Leader II with the City of Millbrae. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid CALIFORNIA Class C Operator's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and a satisfactory driving record.

Certificates: Must possess a first aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain one

Service Standards

Must successfully complete background process. All candidates will be fingerprinted pursuant to California State Law. All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.
