Job description

The Recreation Leader 1 is responsible for working with the Recreation Community Center Director to plan, develop, schedule, and implement approved programming offered at Citiparks’ Recreation Community Centers. These activities include, but are not limited to: physical and leisure activities, organized sports, afterschool educational programming, non-physical activities, food/meal service, social activities, music, and fine arts and crafts. The Recreation Leader 1 works collaboratively with community members to ensure that recreation programs address community issues, concerns, and/or needs while assisting with the implementation of the department's plan.

Salary: $41,200 per year.

Union: This position is included in the Recreation Teacher's Union, Service Employees International Union, Local #668, meet and discuss unit and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding.
Civil Service Classification: Non-Competitive.

  • Pennsylvania Act 153 Clearance prior to appointment.
  • Applicants must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and remain a resident throughout employment.
  • A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required to be presented and verified prior to appointment to the position and must be maintained throughout employment.

NOTE: The City of Pittsburgh conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. The background investigation includes but is not limited to criminal background, driver's license and City of Pittsburgh real estate tax payments.

Qualifying Requirements:

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show one (1) year of full-time experience in recreation programming, curriculum implementation, teaching, or a related field.
  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show an Associate's Degree from a fully accredited institution in Education, Social Service, Recreation, Community Recreation, Leisure Studies, Theater Arts or a related field. A Teaching Certification is a plus.
  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or related work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is three (3) years.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the planning, development and implementation of approved recreation center programming.
  • Demonstrates excellence in customer service.
  • Assists with city-wide special events as assigned.
  • Assists with overseeing daily activities and participants while maintaining structured and organized programs.
  • Assists with the implementation of Citiparks youth programs such as summer camps, afterschool, and Rec2Tech.
  • Performs daily janitorial and maintenance activity and adheres to City/County code requirements.
  • Reports all accidental injuries occurring at recreation center in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provides a safe and secure environment for youth and adult members.
  • Acts as a liaison with community organizations regarding approved programs and/or events.
  • May direct the work of and provide technical assistance to part-time volunteers and/or seasonal personnel as assigned.
  • Participates in professional development and training programs.
  • Ensures that duties are performed in accordance with established City, County, state and/or federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Submits requisitions for equipment needs and reports property damage and/or maintenance problems.
  • Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid to victims in distress as needed.
  • Assists in the maintenance and development of the recreation center program and scheduling/permit calendar.
  • Assists in the handling and logging of program revenues and expenditures as needed.
  • Plans, develops, directs, coordinates, organizes, and controls the materials, equipment, and personnel under jurisdiction toward the effective attainment of program goals.
  • Works weekends, evenings and holidays, as might be required.
