Job summary

Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Recreation Facilities Specialist to support the operation and maintenance of top-rate indoor Recreational Sports facilities at the Homewood campus.

The role covers event setup, equipment handling, cleaning, safety compliance, and guest access duties, with a focus on reliable, courteous service and adherence to university safety standards.

A high school diploma and at least one year of related experience, plus a Maryland driver’s license, are required.

Responsibilities

• Performs event-related set-up & breakdown throughout the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation & Well-Being.
• Operates various equipment related to maintaining Ralph S. O’Connor Center, such as boom lift, power tools, scaffolding, and ladders.
• Cleans and maintains gymnasium facilities and floors, studio spaces, hallways, and pool deck using cleaning equipment.
• Assists with securing and unlocking facility spaces required to provide guests access to the facilities.
• Ensures safety and reports hazards or needed repairs; maintains clean and orderly work areas.

Johns Hopkins offers a robust recreation program to include group fitness classes, personal training, outdoor experiential education, aquatic activities, sport clubs, and intramural sports. In a typical year, our programs and facilities receive approximately 250,000 visits from students, staff, and faculty. The Department of Recreation is the largest employer of students on campus and additionally provides robust student leadership development opportunities. Built as a cross-collaborative campus destination, the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation & Well-Being features all-new state-of-the-art equipment for strength and cardiovascular training, expanded group fitness offerings, and mindfulness and meditation programming. The focus is on fostering holistic student health, a community of care, and an increased emphasis on self-care and well-being. The Recreation Facilities Specialist is a specialized bargaining unit position to assist with the operation and maintenance of top-rate indoor Recreational Sports facilities. Maintains recreation areas and ensures the facilities are prepared for scheduled events.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

• Performs event-related set-up & breakdown throughout the Ralph S. O’Connor Center for Recreation & Well-Being, i.e., moving equipment, cleaning facilities, inspects facilities to ensure they are safe and will provide a pleasurable experience for all involved.
• Operates various equipment related to maintaining Ralph S. O’Connor Center, such as but not limited to: boom lift, large and small power tools and attachments. Utilizes scaffolding and ladders.
• Uses hand- and power-operated equipment to perform various tasks, including but not limited to,
• Moving gymnasium equipment and facility supplies
• Using custodial cleaning equipment to clean, wax, and polish gymnasium floors, studio spaces, hallways, swimming pool deck, weight room floors, and gym equipment
• Utilizing power-operated scrubbing and polishing equipment, mop and cleaning rags
• Empty and clean vacant lockers, bag and store unclaimed belongings, and change lock combinations.
• Transport and set up equipment and supplies such as, but is not limited to: gym equipment (i.e., volleyball, badminton, and pickleball nets and accessories).
• Responsible for picking up and sweeping walkways and other surfaces, emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, disposes of waste and debris.
• Operate University-owned or rented passenger vehicles to run errands, fill gas tanks, occasionally pick up and drop off department deliveries, etc.
• Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition. Inform supervisor of faulty/broken equipment throughout the facility.
• Assists University Policy and Department staff with securing and unlocking facility spaces required to provide guests access to the facilities. Corrects and/or reports guest irregularities to the proper authority.
• Ensures the department follows current safety measures during winter periods by shoveling snow and ice from exterior/entryways and by applying materials that aid in melting ice and snow.
• Ensures the safety of worksites, utility safety equipment, and related safe work practices; corrects or notifies others of safety issues and needed repairs, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to interact with patrons, faculty, students, and staff in order to answer questions, handle routine problems, and to aid in a courteous manner.
• Ability to work varied work schedule; overtime may be offered based on seasonal demands.
• Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand, walk, or otherwise move about campus on a continuous basis.
• General knowledge of Athletics and Recreational Sports preferred.

Key Relationships

• The Recreation Worker is directly supervised by the Associate Director. This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, and other outside constituencies and must demonstrate strong customer service & interpersonal skills.
