Job summary

The City of St. George is seeking a part-time Recreation Assistant to support softball programs, leagues and events. Under the Recreation Supervisor, you will supervise part-time staff, assist in program development, and ensure excellent customer service at facilities and events.

The role requires a high school diploma, experience in leagues or events is preferred, and the ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. Driver license required; CPR/First Aid preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Preference given to applicants with education in recreation or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year experience in leagues, tournaments, and events for a city or similar organization is preferred.
  • Customer service experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the work of part-time employees and volunteers during shifts.
  • Assists in staff training, assignments, recruiting, and evaluation.
  • Provide customer service in person and over the phone; answer questions and refer customers.
  • Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs and services.
  • Assists with planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and maintains relationships with contractors.
  • May be delegated tasks normally performed by full-time employees.
  • Aids in promotion and advertising of programs and special events.
  • Registers participants for programs, classes and activities.
  • General office and clerical duties.
  • Cleans and maintains recreation facilities and work areas.
  • Works programs and events taking charge of assigned programs, events, or facilities.
  • Runs errands.
  • Contributes to team effort by other duties as needed.
  • Follows city policies and procedures.

Job description

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, performs various tasks as necessary to provide recreation services to the St. George Community. This position will primarily work with Softball Programs including leagues and tournaments, and help with Special Events as required.(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

  1. Oversees the work of other part time employees and volunteers during assigned shifts or tasks
  2. Assists in staff training, assignments, recruiting, and evaluation of staff
  3. Provide customer service in person and over the phone; answering questions and/or referring customers to appropriate staff members
  4. Responds to public inquiries providing accurate information regarding recreation programs and services
  5. Assists the Recreation Supervisor with planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and helps to maintain relationships with program contractors
  6. May be delegated tasks normally performed by FT employees
  7. Aids in the promotion and advertising of programs and special events
  8. Registers participants for programs, classes and activities
  9. General office and clerical duties
  10. Copies and prepares various brochures, flyers, schedules, rosters, etc. for distribution
  11. Organizes, cleans, prepares and maintains recreation facilities and other work areas
  12. Works programs and special events taking charge in part or whole of assigned programs, events, or facilities
  13. Runs errands
  14. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing other related duties as needed
  15. Follow all city policies and procedures
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies. Requires moderately heavy physical activity exerting 25-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Mental demands of intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Note:

Must be available to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and other schedules to help prepare for recreation offerings. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 28 hours per week over a period of twelve months.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent. Preference given to those with education in recreation or a related field.

Experience:
  • Minimum of one year experience working in leagues, tournaments, and events for the City of St. George, or a similar organization, showing adequate knowledge and skill in assigned tasks
  • Minimum of one year experience using Sportsman SQL, or similar registration management software platform, showing adequate knowledge and skill in assigned tasks preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification required. Must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
