Job summary

The City of Northglenn seeks an Aquatics Coordinator II to lead daily operations of indoor and seasonal outdoor facilities, supervising lifeguards, instructors and seasonal staff to ensure safe, welcoming experiences for the public.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and oversee daily operations of the City’s indoor and seasonal outdoor aquatic facilities, ensuring facilities are safe, properly staffed, operationally ready and welcoming to the public.

Nature of Work

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor - Aquatics, the Aquatics Coordinator II is responsible for the daily operation of the City's indoor and seasonal outdoor aquatic facilities and programs. This position serves as the primary day-to-day operational leader for Aquatics and directly supervises Head Lifeguards, lifeguards, swim instructors, aquatic fitness instructors and other assigned seasonal and part-time staff.

The Aquatics Coordinator II is responsible for maintaining safe, efficient and customer-focused aquatic operations through staff leadership, water quality monitoring, facility and equipment oversight, emergency preparedness and regulatory compliance. The position coordinates staff recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, certification tracking, in-service training, performance management and ongoing staff development.

The position works collaboratively with maintenance staff and contractors to identify and resolve mechanical and facility issues.

This position assists with budget monitoring, purchasing, revenue tracking, program evaluation and the development and implementation of aquatic policies and procedures. Work requires independent judgment, sound decision-making and the ability to respond effectively to operational challenges, personnel matters and emergency situations.

Performance is evaluated through safe and effective facility operations, staff development and performance, program outcomes, customer service, regulatory compliance, and achievement of departmental goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate and oversee daily operations of the City’s indoor and seasonal outdoor aquatic facilities, ensuring facilities are safe, properly staffed, operationally ready and welcoming to the public.
• Directly supervise assigned Head Lifeguards, lifeguards, swim instructors, aquatic fitness instructors and other seasonal and part-time aquatic employees.
• Provide day-to-day direction to Head Lifeguards and other aquatic staff, establish clear performance expectations and ensure consistent implementation of policies, procedures and safety standards.
• Develop, maintain and adjust staff schedules to provide appropriate coverage based on facility operations, programming, attendance, employee availability and applicable safety requirements.
• Monitor employee certifications, training requirements and expiration dates and ensure employees maintain the qualifications necessary for their assigned responsibilities.
• Develop, conduct and document regular lifeguard in-service trainings, emergency drills, rescue skill evaluations, performance observations and other required staff development activities.
• Monitor aquatic mechanical and operational systems, including filtration, circulation, heating, chemical feed and other pool equipment. Identify operational concerns and coordinate with Facilities Maintenance staff, contractors and the Recreation Supervisor to address mechanical and facility issues.
• Conduct routine inspections of aquatic facilities, equipment and operational areas to identify safety, maintenance and operational concerns and initiate appropriate corrective action.
• Exercise appropriate operational authority to restrict access to or temporarily close aquatic areas, amenities or equipment when conditions present a safety, water quality, mechanical or regulatory concern, consistent with City policies and established procedures.
• Ensure rescue equipment, first aid supplies, AEDs and other emergency equipment are inspected, maintained, appropriately documented and readily available.
• Coordinate the implementation, scheduling and evaluation of aquatic programs, including swim lessons, aquatic fitness, recreational aquatic programs, special events and other aquatic offerings.
• Coordinate classes and programs, including instructor assignments, facility space, equipment, supplies and other operational needs.
• Monitor program enrollment, attendance, revenue, expenses and participant feedback and provide recommendations to the Recreation Supervisor regarding program modifications and improvements.
• Assist the Recreation Supervisor with aquatic program and facility budgets, purchasing, revenue monitoring, cost recovery analysis and other fiscal responsibilities.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for aquatic operational questions from employees, participants, parents, contractors, internal City partners and members of the public.
• Manage and coordinate accurate online registration (currently through the RecTrac software) for all classes and programs
• Support marketing, outreach and recruitment efforts for all aquatic programs
• Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external patrons and partners
• Represent the City of Northglenn in a positive manner
• Maintain and utilize a city purchasing card for purchases, following all prevailing policies and practices of the City of Northglenn

Hiring Range: $60,823-$68,000
Full Salary Range: $60,823-$85,153

Bachelors Degree in recreation, physical education, theatre production or a related field, and at least three years of experience in an organized recreation program; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills.

Experience working with year-round indoor aquatic facilities, seasonal outdoor pools, lifeguard operations, swim instruction, aquatic fitness programming, pool mechanical systems and/or large part-time and seasonal workforces is preferred.

Supplemental Information

• Must possess, at the time of appointment, and maintain a valid Colorado motor vehicle operator’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Must successfully complete required background, physical and drug screening.
• Regular evening and weekend work is required. Extended hours and holiday work may be required based on facility operations, programs and emergency situations
• Attendance is an essential function of the job.
• Must possess or obtain within the timeframe established by the City an approved Pool Operator certification.
• Must possess or obtain within the timeframe established by the City a Lifeguard Instructor certification.
• Water Safety Instructor certification is required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by the City.
• Lifeguard Instructor Trainer and Water Safety Instructor Trainer certifications are preferred.
