Job summary

City of Sugar Land is seeking a creative and community focused Recreation Coordinator to plan, coordinate, and deliver engaging recreation programs, events, and activities that provide safe and enjoyable community experiences.

The role collaborates with the Recreation Supervisor, supervises program delivery, manages budgets and facility use, and ensures compliance with laws and policies while engaging residents across Sugar Land.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate, organize, schedule, budget, develop and implement recreation activities, programs.
• Collaborate with Recreation Supervisor to coordinate, organize, schedule, budget, develop and implement recreation events.
• Supervise program, facility and event guests, and enforce rules and safety standards.
• Oversee the set up and take down of equipment and the preparation of venue for activities and events.
• Evaluate programs for effectiveness and participation levels; track services and generate operational reports.
• Market and publicize special events, recreation and leisure services to citizens in accordance with city policy.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Business/Public Administration, Recreation Administration, Marketing or a related field

Tools

Texas Driver’s License (Class C)

CPR/AED and First Aid Training (to obtain within 6 months)

What We Pay

The Recreation Coordinator is an exempt position with a starting salary of $66,040 - $75,940 annually.

What You’ll Do as a Recreation Coordinator:

• Coordinate, organize, schedule, budget, develop and implement recreation activities, programs, games, classes, wellness classes, trips and special programs. Ensure activities are in compliance with all laws, policies, regulations, and goals.
• Collaborate with Recreation Supervisor to coordinate, organize, schedule, budget, develop and implement recreation events. Ensure activities are in compliance with all laws, policies, regulations, and goals.
• Supervise program, facility and event guests, and enforce rules and safety standards. Ensure equipment and facilities are maintained and in clean and safe condition. Monitor program activities and assist participants in recreation activities and special programs.
• Oversee the set up and take down of equipment and the preparation of venue for activities and events.
• Evaluate programs for effectiveness and participation levels. Assist in the development of new programs and recommends program changes. Track services provided, monitor results, and generate operational reports as needed. Complete all required reports and presentations as needed.
• Market and publicize special events, recreation and leisure services to citizens in accordance with city policy. Maintain good public relations and address citizen complaints in a courteous and professional manner.
• Assist in processing facility reservations, memberships, and registration for all programs, classes and events. Accepting customer payments and maintaining a balanced cash drawer. Answering incoming calls and directing calls as required.
• Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster.
• Stay abreast of and comply with all City and departmental policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director or their designee.

What You Bring

Formal Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Business/Public Administration, Recreation Administration, Marketing or a related field from an accredited school or university.

Relatable Work Experience:

• Two years of progressively responsible experience in planning recreation events or related discipline.
• Municipal experience is a plus.

Training (License and/or Certification):

• Valid Class "C" Texas Driver’s License.
• Ability to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Training within 6 months.
