Job summary

Syracuse City is seeking a part-time Recreation Assistant I to officiate at various athletic events. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of sports rules, the ability to effectively communicate, and work a flexible schedule. This role spans all seasons and requires interacting with team members and the community.

Qualifications

  • Must be 14 years of age or older.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of sport(s) to be officiated.
  • Ability to read and write, and work a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and officiate organized athletic events.
  • Monitor play and enforce rules as an official.
  • Record scores and report results to the coordinator.

Job description

Job Title: Recreation Assistant I

Department: Recreation

Reports To: Recreation Program Coordinator

Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly) (all year long – all seasons)

Wage Scale: $10.40 – $12.00 (Typical starting wage $10.40 - $11.20)

Close Date: July 11th, 2025

Hours: Hours may vary (typically late afternoon/ early evening and Saturdays)

Position Summary:
Under general supervision, attends organized athletic events such as softball, football, soccer,
etc. and officiates games, serves as the "official" interpreter of rules and regulations, monitors
play, umpires, referees, acts as a line judge, etc., records the individual and team scores,
provides the final/official results to Recreation Program Coordinator, and/or Recreation Manager,
and other duties as assigned by the Recreation Program Coordinator, and/or Recreation Manager.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of multiple sports rules and regulations
• Ability to work well with others
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop,
kneel, crouch or crawl, use hands to finger, handle or fee, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear
and see. Duties require sufficient mobility to work in an athletic setting; standing and walking
for prolonged periods of time. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision,
distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. The employee is also occasionally requiredto sit.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moderate to loud
