Job summary

City of South Burlington is seeking a Parks Maintenance Worker to perform a wide range of labor tasks in city parks and recreation facilities. Responsibilities include mowing, debris clearance, equipment operation, snow removal support, and event setup/breakdown.

You will work with Parks & Recreation and Public Works staff to maintain safe, attractive park spaces. The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience, plus a Vermont CDL B with tanker endorsement

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
• Possess Vermont CDL B with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Knowledge of landscaping materials and athletic field maintenance.
• Ability to operate power tools and equipment safely.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Experience in repairs in parks and city buildings preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performing labor as necessary to complete assigned tasks.
• Assisting with parks maintenance projects including mowing, cleanups, and repairs.
• Operate equipment such as mowers, weed whackers, chainsaws, and chippers.
• Support snow and ice management activities when needed.
• Perform janitorial and custodial duties in parks facilities.
• Assist with event setup and breakdown during festivals.
• Collaborate with Public Works staff and other departments.
• Provide coverage for emergency city work as required.
• Keep accurate time and work orders for tasks performed.
• Maintain safety and operating procedures in all tasks.
• Engage with the public and other city divisions as needed.

Job description

1. Performing labor as necessary to complete assigned tasks.
2. Performing manual tasks in assisting with all parks maintenance division projects and tasks, including, but not limited to, general maintenance and repair of parks and recreation facilities, mowing, tree and brush clearing, and construction of new infrastructure. clearing debris, raking fields, and other park-related work.
3. Operating equipment incidental to the work or task assigned. This may include power tools, lawn mowers, weed whackers, chainsaws, chippers, tractors, sidewalk plows, and other equipment, as necessary.
4. Operating a snowplow, sidewalk plow, sander, and spreader. Assisting with snow and ice management activities.
5. Performing janitorial and custodial duties within city parks and recreational facilities.
6. Assisting the recreation department during festivals and events. Responsible for setup before events and breakdown/cleanup after events.
7. Working collaboratively with recreation program staff and other public works personnel as necessary.
8. Availability to assist in public works-related emergency work.
9. Performing duties requiring independent judgment and in accordance with established safety and operational procedures.
10. Ensuring time and work are accounted for in written work orders as appropriate.
11. Making routine contacts with other city divisions' staff within Public Works and occasional contact with the public.
12. Supporting the coordination of activities between all staff and other departments within the city.
13. Performing other tasks or functions as necessary to accomplish City and Department goals and objectives.

1. High school diploma or equivalent, two years of experience in parks, landscaping, or public works maintenance activities.
2. Possession of Vermont CDL B license with tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within six months.
