Job summary

Baltimore County is looking for a Recreation Activity Center Leader to supervise and conduct a variety of recreation programs. This role includes planning activities, managing volunteer staff, and ensuring a safe environment for participants. Candidates must have a high school diploma and ideally some college education, along with relevant experience in recreation or education. CPR and first aid certifications are required, which must be obtained shortly after hiring.

Several vacancies exist in the Department of Recreation and Parks for Recreation Activity Center (RAC) Leaders.

Definition of Responsibility
Responsibilities include planning, organizing, and supervising a variety or recreational and parks programs, as well as ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of community relation facilities.

Under close supervision, leads a wide variety of recreation activities and special events within a recreation activity center.

Essential Job Duties
  • Assists in the coordination, planning, promoting, scheduling, and evaluating of a variety of recreation activities and special events in a heavily programmed recreation activity center.
  • Plans and leads a diversified program of indoor and outdoor activities in the following categories: cultural arts, fitness, hobbies, performing arts, sports and socialization.
  • Meets with participants of recreation activity center programs to determine leisure activity needs.
  • Participates in recreation activity center activities.
  • Chaperones field trips taken by recreation activity center participants.
  • Interacts with recreation activity center program participants.
  • Assists children with completing homework.
  • Inspects facilities to make certain that structures, areas, and equipment are safe, adequate and functioning properly.
  • Recruits, trains and coordinates the work of occasional staff and volunteers.
  • Provides site supervision and oversee daily operations in the absence of a RAC Coordinator.
  • Provides basic first aid when necessary and respond to emergency situations according to protocol.
  • Communicates effectively with participants, parents/guardians, and other staff members.
  • Maintains accurate records of attendance, incidents, and food service logs.
  • Assists in the setup, operation, and clean-up of recreation programs and events.

Education and Experience
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
Plus
One-year of successful experience as a recreation leader, recreation specialist, teacher assistant, social worker or counselor in a closely related field, or one-year experience in education as a teacher.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of at least 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university.

Possession of valid CPR and first aid certifications.

Possession of valid ServSafe Food Handler certification.

  • Knowledge of the needs, capabilities and interests of diverse youth groups and individuals.

  • Skill in handling hostile individuals and individuals experiencing a crisis.
  • Skill in administering CPR and first aid.
  • Ability to handle hostile individuals and crisis situations.
  • Ability to lead and supervise volunteers.
  • Ability to administer CPR and first aid.
Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid driver’s license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.

Must earn and maintain valid CPR and first aid certifications within 10 months of appointment.

Must earn and maintain valid ServSafe Food Handler certification within 10 months of appointment.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Qualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience as submitted on their application and supplemental questionnaire. Employees in this classification may be assigned to work evenings, holidays, nights and weekends as needed.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails walking over rough and uneven surfaces in the inspection of facilities and grounds; infrequent exposure to adverse weather while conducting outdoor public programs and events.

Some lifting and carrying in preparing for programs and events.

Administering CPR and first aid; and handling and serving food to participants of recreation activity center programs.
