Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in counseling related discipline.
  • Experience: At least two years working with substance use disorder patients in a behavioral health clinical setting; three years lived addiction recovery may substitute for workplace experience.
  • Skills: Ability to interact with individuals in acute crisis with hope, respect, and empowerment in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: Willingness to undergo certification training with a recognized Coaching Certification organization.

Responsibilities

SUMMARY:

The Recovery Coach engages with patients brought to the hospital emergency room for a substance use disorder or related condition. This role is responsible for assisting patients and families in the behavioral health system to enhance their recovery and promote wellness. The Recovery Specialist must have experience, training and/or education in the field of addiction.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Engage with patients brought to the hospital emergency room for a substance use disorder or related condition. Such engagement must be provided in a non-judgmental manner and designed to refer the patient to addiction specificservices
  • Conduct screening assessments with patients directed to the specialist by the ER physician to ascertain suitability and receptivity to treatmentreferrals.
  • Relate recovery in a positive manner through coaching, role modeling, and mentoring to maximize referral placementpotential
  • Facilitate transfer to treatment settings, working with hospital staff to ensure transportation ifnecessary
  • Develop referral relationships with community resources (detox, rehab, etc.) across wide geographicarea
  • Conduct at least two follow-up telephone motivational calls to patients (and families if involved)who refuse treatment referrals at time of ERexperience
  • Document, as directed, in the hospital record keeping system assuring compliance with privacyand confidentiality regulations. Maintain Recovery Specialist contact log for use in follow-upactivity
  • Cooperate with required hospital administrative and safety protocols and function under the professional authority of the ER physician and nursingmanagement
  • Interact, as necessary and appropriate, with hospital social workers or navigators to enable "warm handoffs" of patients overlapping Recovery Specialist shiftcoverage
  • The Emergency Room Recovery Specialist reports to the Gosnold Director of RecoveryManagement and, while in the ER, to the Chief of Emergency Medicine or his/herdesignee
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, Experience, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a counseling related discipline and/or one (1) year of experience in related field.
  • Experience:At least two years working with substance use disorder patients in a behavioral health clinicalsetting. Three years of lived addiction recovery experience may be substituted for the workplaceexperience
  • Skills:Ability to interact and relate to persons experiencing an acute drug or alcohol crisis and those inearly recovery. Must be able to communicate hope, respect, self-direction, and empowerment in a non- judgmentalway. Ability to interact professionally with hospital medical personnel, patient advocacy groupsand communityresources
  • Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:Willingness and ability to undergo certification training with a recognized Coaching Certification organization
