Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Preferred Associate degree in Manufacturing/Technology or Quality.
  • Experience reading blueprints and applying inspection techniques.
  • Ability to read measuring devices and perform basic math.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect incoming materials and purchased parts for compliance with drawings and quality requirements.
  • Verify part numbers, quantities, revisions, and conditions of shipments.
  • Identify nonconforming materials and document findings in ERP/MRP.
  • Maintain and calibrate inspection equipment; ensure calibration status before use.
  • Collaborate with Receiving, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality teams to support production.

The Receiving Inspector serves as the first quality checkpoint within the manufacturing process by inspecting incoming materials, components, and purchased parts to ensure they conform to Cleaver-Brooks engineering drawings, purchase specifications, quality standards, and applicable code requirements before they are released to production.

This position works closely with Receiving, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality to prevent nonconforming materials from entering production, reducing rework, improving product quality, and supporting on-time manufacturing operations.

Essential Duties
Incoming Material Inspection
  • Inspect incoming materials and outgoing ship loose parts and materials, fabricated components, and purchased parts for compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, purchase orders, and quality requirements.
  • Verify incoming shipments for correct part numbers, quantities, revision levels, dimensions, material identification, and overall condition.
  • Identify shipping damage, missing components, improper packaging, contamination, corrosion, or other conditions that may affect product quality.
  • Perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment, including:
  • Calipers, micrometers, tape measures
  • Height gauges, thread gauges, pin gauges
  • Straightedges and other inspection equipment as required
  • Compare inspection results to engineering drawings, inspection criteria, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, bills of material, inspection instructions, and basic manufacturing documentation.
Material Documentation & Traceability
  • Review vendor documentation — Material Test Reports (MTRs), Certificates of Conformance, heat numbers, lot numbers, serial numbers, and packing documentation — to verify compliance with purchasing and quality requirements.
  • Ensure material traceability is maintained between received materials, certifications, and company records.
  • Verify required product markings, identification stamps, and traceability information are present and accurate.
Nonconforming Material Control
  • Identify materials that fail to meet specifications and immediately communicate findings to appropriate Quality and Purchasing personnel.
  • Segregate and identify suspect or nonconforming materials to prevent unintended use.
  • Document inspection findings accurately within the ERP/MRP system.
  • Create and maintain nonconformance documentation, including inspection records and Material Review Board (MRB) transactions.
  • Assist with investigations related to supplier quality concerns and recurring material issues.
Cross-Functional Support
  • Work closely with Receiving, Purchasing, Production Planning, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality personnel to prioritize inspections based on production requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying recurring supplier quality issues and recommending opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain inspection equipment in proper working condition and verify calibration status before use.
  • Follow established quality procedures, work instructions, safety policies, and applicable manufacturing standards.
  • Maintain organized inspection records and documentation to support internal audits and quality system requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Environmental Factors And Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily in a manufacturing and warehouse environment with frequent exposure to moving equipment, overhead cranes, forklifts, welding operations, machinery, noise, dust, heat, lubricants, and varying temperatures.
